Announce multiple avahi cname aliases across your local network. supports Ubuntu 12.04+
Hi!
After installing in Centos 6.4 and run the command avahi-alias i got this error:
[root@pc ~]# avahi-alias start
Traceback (most recent call last):
File "/usr/bin/avahi-alias", line 5, in
import avahi, dbus
ImportError: No module named avahi
I would suggest ensuring the tool does not announce the primary host name already announced by the avahi daemon?
I haven't tested this super thoroughly, in my limited testing having the primary host name dot local in the aliases.d /default file causes none of the alises to get announced correctly
I followed the instructions in the readme, but look for yourself:
pi@airplaypi:~$ sudo service avahi-alias start
Failed to start avahi-alias.service: Unit avahi-alias.service failed to load: No such file or directory.
What can I do to make this work?
CC licenses are not considered appropriate for software, according to: http://wiki.creativecommons.org/FAQ#Can_I_apply_a_Creative_Commons_license_to_software.3F. Unless you meant the license to only apply to the README...
They recommend a license from the FSF, which is basically some flavour of GPL.
As it stands, there are no software licenses that are technically compatible with CC.
i think the newest / maintained version can be found at

I suspect this is an issue more with Yosemite but I'll ask here in case anyone has input. On Mountain Lion my Ubuntu 12.04 Vagrant VM resolves aliases but on my new Mavericks machine the aliases do not resolve. In both cases local.local (the main Avahi A record) resolve perfectly, on Mountain Lion the aliases work as well, on Yosemite they do not.
Any ideas what I might be doing wrong or might need to change?
[Edit January 7, 2015: I had typed Mavericks but meant Yosemite]
Issuing sudo service avahi-aliases start
and stop
hang. Waiting and breaking with ^C show a status of; which look reasonable to me, its just that the command to start/stop hangs.
status
works fine, I haven't tried other service commands.
$ sudo service avahi-aliases start # .. ^C
$ sudo service avahi-aliases status
avahi-aliases start/pre-start, process 2089
$ sudo service avahi-aliases stop # .. ^C
$ sudo service avahi-aliases status
avahi-aliases stop/pre-start, process 2089
Confirmed on two ubuntu14 machines
installation method:
sudo apt-get install python-avahi
python2.7 -m pip install git+https://github.com/airtonix/avahi-aliases.git
sudo service avahi-aliases start # this is where it hangs
