module-federation4's Introduction

Build Status

module-federation4

webpack-plugin-module-federation for Webpack4, backport from https://github.com/ScriptedAlchemy/webpack-external-import

State

not production ready at present.

Usage

npm install --save-dev webpack-plugin-module-federation

Configure your webpack.config.js

const ModuleFederationPlugin = require('webpack-plugin-module-federation');

module.exports = {
    output: {
		publicPath: 'http://localhost:3002/',
	},
    plugins: [
        new ModuleFederationPlugin({
            name: '_federation_website2',
            library: 'website2',
            filename: 'remoteEntry.js',
            libraryTarget: 'global',
            remotes: {
                'website1': 'website1'
            },
            expose: {
                Title: './src/Title',
                App: './src/App'
            },
        }),
    ]
};

Import module from remote

In remote project, configure webpack.config.js.

const ModuleFederationPlugin = require('webpack-plugin-module-federation');

module.exports = {
    output: {
		publicPath: 'http://localhost:3001/',
	},
    plugins: [
        new ModuleFederationPlugin({
            name: '_federation_website1',
            library: 'website1',
            filename: 'remoteEntry.js',
            libraryTarget: 'global',
            remotes: {
                'website2': '_federation_website2'
            },
            expose: {
                App: './src/App'
            },
        }),
    ]
};

Add remoteEntry in your HTML

<html>
	<head>
		<script src="http://localhost:3002/remoteEntry.js"></script>
	</head>
	<body>
		<div id="app"></div>
	</body>
</html>

Then use dynamic import

import React, { lazy, Suspense, useState } from 'react';
import Footer from './Footer';

const Title = lazy(() => import('website2/Title')); // federated

export default () => {
	return (
		<>
			<Suspense fallback={'fallback'}>
				<Title />
			</Suspense>
			<p>
				This app loads the heading above from website2, and doesnt expose
				anything itself.
			</p>
			<Footer />
		</>
	);
};

Exmaple

See examples here.

git clone
yarn install
yarn build
yarn install:example
yarn dev:example

module-federation4's Issues

Some changes react-scripts ( CRA )

If your application builds using react-scripts (CRA)
Then you need to make some changes.

  • customize-cra
  • react-app-rewired
const {
  override,
  disableEsLint,
  addWebpackPlugin
} = require('customize-cra');
const path = require('path');

const ModuleFederationPlugin = require('webpack-plugin-module-federation');
const packagejson = require('./package.json');

// change react-scripts settings
function patchConfig(conf) {
    const config = {...conf};
    config.output.publicPath = packagejson.homepage;

    // It is very important
    config.output.globalObject = 'window';

    delete config.optimization.runtimeChunk;
    return config;
}

module.exports = {
  webpack: override(
    disableEsLint(),
    config => patchConfig(config),
    addWebpackPlugin(
        new ModuleFederationPlugin({
            name: 'federation_container1',
            library: {
                type: 'var',
                name: 'federation_container1',
            },
            filename: 'remoteEntry.js',
            remotes: {
                'website2': '_federation_website2',
            },
            exposes: {
                Title: path.resolve(__dirname, './src/exported/title'),
                Footer: path.resolve(__dirname, './src/exported/footer'),
                App: './src/app'
            }
        }),
    )
  )
};

Status update on backport.

Hello,

I’m one of the authors of Module Federation, responsible for the github issue mentioned in the readme.

Having built this mechanism - I might be able to provide insights on a backport. I currently have proprietary backports or compatibility layers running in production.

How’s the progression been on the backport?

I’ve had some success by pulling parts of the webpack 5 runtime into the compatibility layers. Creating a bi-directional interface between the two major webpack versions.
