When opening a .PO file, Qt Linguist always treats it as Latin-1. 

Having or not a BOM in the file will prompt an error in Qt Linguist.

How could the user specify the encoding of the file?

The following code:

Qt Linguist 4.6 on Mac OS and Windows will mess up the IDs of the strings in 
the .PO file if they 
contain multiple column characters. E.g.

    #: block:2:title
    msgid "Welcome!"
    msgstr ""

...will be transformed into:

    #: block:2:0
    msgid "Welcome!"
    msgstr "Bienvenue!"

Notice the `block:2:title` becoming `block:2:0`

What steps will reproduce the problem?
1. Open a .PO file like those created by Drupal's i18n module.
2. Click on any of the strings inside. Edit, or not, some of the translations.
3. Save.

What is the expected output? What do you see instead?
Edited strings with the same IDs as the original.

What version of the product are you using? On what operating system?
4.6 on Mac OS 10.6.

i'm translating and fixing the translation of virtualbox but sometimes 
words/phrases cant be translated even if everything is written correctly like 
displayed in the pic, even the "Find" function itself cant find a word/phrase 
that IS there, i'm translating from english to brazilian portuguese, WinXp 32 
bits.

Hello. It seems that you are very knowledgeable about repackaging Qt. So
please consider also implementing the following Trolltech request I made
regarding providing a separate run-time installer:

Though my request is for Windows, obviously it can apply to Mac too. 

It would be a great complement to your current package, and the numerous
Qt-based application authors out there can just ask their users to download
and install the (appropriate version of the) runtimes from Google Code. ;)
If only you would kindly accede to this request... it would be simply great!
