Aeronautical Charting

Resources for aeronautical charting, intention is to fill the gap between ICAO paper products and the need to use modern tools for charting but sometimes the icons and symbols are not there, as well other tools will be added along the way.

If you want to just use the icons or styles Download as ZIP the repository and extract, downloading individual SVG wont work.

QGZ templates prepared to comply with Annex 4 Chart

Some grids need to be enabled as they are turned off by default for rendering reasons, always remember to use a Projected Coordinate System for your map the grid is already pre-configured to render in EPSG 4326 (WGS84)

Windsock symbol

Apparently there is no official ICAO version to use, will use as inspiration other countries charts to see what they use

ENR template

Create ENR templates in

A3 size portrait
A3 size landscape

101-VOR icon white background

For some reason there is a white background which shouldn't be there, probably need to recreate in Inkscape again just using lines instead of the hexagon option to remove white background

create script to convert SVG to PNG icons

The idea is to create a script that will automatically convert the svg_icons from the normal_svg folder into PNG images

Grid turned off for templates

By leaving the grids turned on by default it causes that on first load and while setting the extent of the area to be used it takes a long time to load it is proposed to turn it off to speed things up and let users turn on once the area of interest (AOI) has been defined

US Letter Size templates

Currently all templates are just for ISO A3 or A4 sizes, it would be required to also have US letter and US Tabloid equivalents

distance symbol for bidirectional route implementation

Currently there is an svg background but is able to show only one direction, it would be good to have a bidirectional arrow as per Doc 8697

Update QGIS Style

A style available directly from within QGIS is available however it requires updates with the latest available information on my local computer https://plugins.qgis.org/styles/89/

28 Day NASR Subscription Files

Hi Antonio,

Thank you for your video series and tutorials on aeronautical charting. They are very helpful!

I am currently working with the 28 Day NASR Subscription File (AIXM 5.1) found here: https://nfdc.faa.gov/webContent/28DaySub/2021-02-25/aixm5.1.zip

When I download the files the one XML with spatial reference is Designated Points. Is this normal? Or are there additional transformations that have to be done to the data? I noticed some files have a "pos" field for latitude/longitude.

Any further information or help is much appreciated!

RVR icon symbol #153

The aerodrome chart requires the use of the following icon for RVR

Template renaming of horizontal separation lines on all Templates

It probably would make sense to annotate the horizontal lines in the following way in case future automation is put in place:

Top Horizontal Separation Line
Bottom Horizontal Separation Line

SVG rendering split

SVG in the repository are in theory created to be used with QGIS and thus use techniques as described in the following documents for leveraging QGIS to alter colors

As not all software functions the same as QGIS and for display purposes it is proposed to create the SVG optimized for QGIS but have a python script that produces a normal rendering version viewable in Inkscape and other software including a PNG option
