Description

This is a repository containing an .Rmd file to produce the slides for my seminar "Using R as a GIS: a crash course in open source cartography and geoprocessing". This seminar took place on 31 July, 2017, and was organised by the Quantative Applied Spatial Ecology group at the Queensland University of Technology (QUT). Note: this is a slightly updated and extended version of the slides, which I used for a guest lecture for EVB222: Spatial Analysis and Modelling Practice at QUT in October of the same year.

The seminar was recorded by Tim Macuga from the Australian Research Council Centre of Excellence for Mathematical and Statistical Frontiers (ACEMS). The recording has been posted to YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AyF8YpBWQIM&t=2334s.

Packages

You will need an installation of LaTeX to compile these Beamer slides. For Windows the recommended installation is MikTex.

Packages required:

  • sp
  • raster
  • rgdal
  • rgeos
  • dplyr
  • magrittr
  • ggplot2
  • ggmap
  • gridExtra
  • ggsn

Data, acknowledgements and citations

I use data from the following sources in the presentation:

  • Great_Barrier_Reef_Features shapefile (CCBY 4.0. © Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority 2014. Updated data available at http://www.gbrmpa.gov.au/geoportal/)
  • B2, B3, B4, B5 (Landsat-8 image courtesy of the U.S. Geological Survey)

These are stored in the repository in /data, except for the landsat data which have been put on CloudStor due to excessive size. Public link here: https://cloudstor.aarnet.edu.au/plus/s/8N1OQQIjlvWpcL7. Please download the zip file and extract only the image files into the /data folder.
