unknown if this is a bug with the theme or the themes API

Some interacting problems:

1. {PostNotes} and its variations cannot be variable-transformed. {JSPostNotes} renders as an empty string ('').
2. {block:PostNotes} only renders if {PostNotes} or a variation renders successfully.
3. Only one variation of {PostNotes} ever renders.

A potential solution would be to render {PostNotes} in the document head, then populate the PostNotes variable with document.getElementById('notes')?.innerHTML || ''. However, problem no.3 means that only the base variable will be viewable.

may contain broken variables with block dependencies

the Official theme uses several more blocks and variables than are documented. for data completeness, these should be implemented into this theme.
