Sorry if I open an issue for this, but cannot find any comment section on your blog.
I followed your awesome testing series, and even if not precisely stated like this, I think it suggests to relies on pure unit testing for service layer.
It sounds to me a bit limiting, considering some other parts of the framework are always involved even in the simplest task.
As a couple of examples:

• How can I test that my service method correctly handles a bi-directional relationship synchronization?
• How can I test Hibernate dirty checking mechanism to have correctly updated my entities?
