When first selecting an option from the single-select dropdown after opening a new attribute update window, the menu pops up a second time. Not a big deal but interrupts the flow just slightly. See video for more.
The current copy for the warning for a blank short description (on the Upload New Media page) is "can't be blank". Can you change that to "Media descriptions can't be blank. Describe what the media depicts. Why is it relevant?"
I think this makes things a bit more active and eliminates confusion caused by mistakenly reading 'unset' as a verb rather than an adjective.
Can you prevent users from choosing other options in a multi-select while the 'None' option is selected? As opposed to just popping up a warning after they've selected 'None' and other options?
On the second Upload New Media page, the aside warning about blank fields (red) is pretty prominent, so I think it makes the 'can't be blank' message (blue) under the link entry field redundant. Can we remove the 'can't be blank' message?

When a search returns no results, the display width of the main content in All Media shrinks.
Similarly, after the All Media page loads (independent of search), the display width of the main content expands on All Media. This one isn't a big deal.
I think the cleanest way to implement this is to allow users to download search results on the All Media page to a CSV, so the filtering tools (which we'll eventually expand) are all in one place.
Queue is looking fantastic. I'm looking to address two small, related issues here: 1) indicating to the researcher which media is the top priority and 2) deciding exactly what media should be featured in the queue.
When clicking on linked "media" from a profile page, the page doesn't change. Note that the link in the browser does change, but the page displayed doesn't.
If either or both fields on the first Upload New Media page are unset and I press the "Upload media" button, the 'can't be blank' warning for the applicable fields briefly pops up then disappears. I think they should stay visible until the fields are set.
The hover zone for the exit button in update windows feels slightly too small, especially on the bottom left side (though I would assume it's symmetrical?). Can we make the zone for a mouse hover larger? Video attached but it's hard to depict the issue without recording mouse clicks.
Let's change the filler policy language to (We'll link the Atlos Rules as soon as they're finalized):
Atlos hosts media depicting notable events relevant to the war in Ukraine. If you’re not sure how to classify media, reference the Atlos Rules.
Do: Upload imagery documenting civilian harm, air strikes, etc. Tag graphic media as ‘Graphic Violence.’ Tag media that permits the identification or location of civilians as ‘Threatens Civilian Safety.’
Don’t: Upload media that depicts nudity, that is not available elsewhere online, or that violates the Atlos Rules.
So I know we discussed this already but I'm circling back to it haha. I think the metadata flags (green) shouldn't displace the background info (pink [ATL-ID, date, number of contributors]), because the background info feels permanent, like it shouldn't move.
I'm thinking the solution here is to put the metadata flags to the right of background info or on a separate row. If they're on a separate row I think we put them above background? So that the background info is kind of grounded right above the Attributes field?
It's unclear who uploaded each version of media right now, so we should create a naming system. Maybe ATL-12345-A and ATL-12345- B? Something to indicate who uploaded what. We may not need this enhancement once the bug that prevents clicking on links to media is resolved.
I think the current notifications are a little obtrusive because users have to manually close each. Could you make them linger for a set time (10 sec?) and then disappear?
The 'User Provided' label in the media field feels a bit weird right next to the buttons. Could we overlay it on the media, put it below, or at least make it come after the buttons? I'm not sure what the right solution is here.
This is a design choice, not a bug, but the dropdown menu currently obscures the warning that 'indeterminate' can't be selected with other options, so the warning is only visible once the dropdown is closed. If you think this is ok, feel free to just close the issue without changes.
I think condensing the Upload New Media page into one page might make the upload process feel a lot less daunting, and I think it's doable now that we support automatic archiving. Not urgent but it could be a nice change to improve flow.
Can we change the confirmation email copy? I'm guessing this is harder than changing platform copy. If so, it's probably not worth your time.
Anyway, if it's a quick fix can you change the confirmation email to:
"Hi [username],
Thanks for joining the Atlos researcher community!
To confirm your account, visit the URL below:
[URL].
Best,
The Atlos Team
If you didn't create an Atlos account, feel free to ignore this email."
When I created my second account, I received an email asking me to confirm the account. The link seems to be broken; I received an empty response error (see the picture below).
Also, I'm not sure if you implemented/pushed email confirmations after I created my first account, but I never got an email asking me to confirm the first account.
The current copy for a warning about unset Media Sensitivity is "can't be blank". Can you change that to "Media sensitivity must be set. If this media isn't sensitive, choose 'Not Sensitive.'"
When we push a server-initiated update to the clients, the last seen notification appears again.
In Chrome, the Atlos logo and ATL-identifiers are still Courier. Safari seems to display Iosevka. sorry :(
Perhaps indicate it's a level of activity in the name? This one requires a conversation, but opening an issue just for logging purposes.
I think we should add a red text warning to the update explanation field when a user exceeds our character limit. And maybe also gray out the "Post update" button when the limit is exceeded?
The copy could be "Explanations may not exceed X characters."
The "Post update ->" button in the geolocation update window can be pressed and doesn't appear grayed-out before a location has been entered. Nothing happens when a user presses the button, but it appears pressable [I need to learn the vocabulary here lol]. To maintain consistency across all of the update window buttons, could you prevent it from being clicked and change it to a lighter shade of blue until something has been entered in the longitude and latitude fields?
Do we even need real-time updates? It would be cool, but also sounds hard.
I'm not sure about this one. Does the Community Confirmed flag looks too much like a button? If so, could we make it the lighter blue of the flags on the media cards?
On a related note, should flag colors be consistent across media pages and cards? If so, I think we would choose the card-color variation for both.
This will require conversation but I wanted to open an issue.
I think we should have two maps, one on the home page/activity feed, and another in the All Media tab. The home page map can be super simple with limited controls. The All Media tab should provide the option to toggle between viewing search results as cards or on a map. This way search can function as a filtering tool for a map and we don't have to implement that twice.
We need to warn users about automatic upload's limits, namely tweets with photos or multiple videos. I'm thinking instead of "We support automatic archiving from YouTube and Twitter. To upload media from other platforms, use manual uploading." we say "We support automatic archiving of videos from YouTube and Twitter. To upload photos or media from other platforms, use manual uploading."
Agh I would love to communicate that we can't handle multiple videos but this is already long. I'll come back to this.
Could we change "should be at most 240 character(s)" to "Your bio may not exceed 240 characters."
The current copy for the state 'Short Description is too short' is "should be at least 8 character(s)". Can you change that to "Media descriptions should be at least 8 characters. Describe what the media depicts. Why is it relevant?"
Thanks!
How should we indicate whether media a user subscribed to is worth checking in on? If attributes have been edited vs if users have left comments? Can we indicate that difference on the subscriptions page? Maybe a little dot to indicate users have made changes since you last viewed the page?
Separately, will we batch email digests?
The start of a conversation.
We should figure out how to condense feeds. I think this will include 1) a broken-squiggly-line expand button, 2) lumped together updates, 3) reducing vertical distance between updates, 4) maybe making the feed reverse chronological?
When I made the first round of copy edits I didn't take into account standardization because I was looking at things on a case by case basis. My current thinking is that minimum warnings should be "Minimum X characters.", maximum warnings should be "Maximum X characters.", and blanks should be "[Field] can't be blank."
I'll include relevant issues below.
When a search returns no results, the user sees "No results" above "There is no media to show". Ideally we'd strike the second line altogether, but I'm guessing it's there for some structural reason in the code for this page. If so, can we change "There is no media to show" to "Check your spelling or try broadening your search"?
Can you make ATL-IDs mentioned in comments automatically link to the Atlos page for that media? This would be cool but isn't urgent or very important.
Can we hide graphic media even on the media page? So that you have to toggle to view the media in the same way you would toggle color? The idea here is that a researcher would be able catalog media without having to see it on the right side of their screen the whole time. Thanks!
