getting-started-with-git's Issues

Show an example of automation or CI

Perhaps a topic that is too advanced, but I think helpful to show examples of how git/GH can improve transparent, reproducible and high-quality research and/or other projects.

The thought occurred to me when I read the pull request (PR) #4 by @jguerinet. This is the one place where people modify the code. I'm wondering about an easy way to detect whether or not they add a GH link to their name.

Add information about git repositories

It can seem abstract to people and for most people -- and especially teams -- the larger benefit is when Git is used within a repository system to work collaboratively to facilitate high-performing projects (such as open and reproducible research).

Suggest adding a description of repository systems early in the introduction. An "advanced" section could introduce GH further.

Git is used to save and track changes to files. Git remote repositories -- such as GitHub or GitLab -- allow analysts to work collaboratively. The repository systems allow people to share code and other files and also to track, comment, edit, identify and discuss issues, perform code checks (identify bugs or recommend code styles), assess and perform integration and other tasks to ensure high-quality programming code.

The system can be used internally within organizations, publicly, or both. Git repository systems are used by over 30 million developers and supports international software projects with over ten thousand collaborators.
