wslinstall's Introduction

WSLInstall

Install any GNU/Linux distribution userspace in Windows Subsystem for Linux (WSL) with compressed RootFS tarballs ๐Ÿ“ฆ (tar.gz) or with Docker containers ๐Ÿณ or with ISO files ๐Ÿ’ฟ

Build

Clone this GitHub repository with this link https://github.com/Biswa96/WSLInstall.git . Use MSBuild (or mingw-w64) to make executable file from project file(.vcxproj). Or use the makefile in WslFunctions folder. The project file only provides x64-Release version.

Build wslapi export libraries:

  • Generate DEF file: gendef /c/Windows/System32/wslapi.dll
  • For MSVC: lib /DEF:wslapi.def /MACHINE:X64
  • For GCC: dlltool -D /c/Windows/System32/wslapi.dll -d wslapi.def -l libwslapi.a

wslapi export library was added in latest mingw-64 toolchain. See this commits for further details:

How to use

WslInstall: Installs GNU/Linux distributions

  1. First make a folder where you want to install that distribution, that may be any partition of internal drives only. External drives are not supported now.
  2. Place both WslInstall.exe and {distribution}.tar.gz files in that same folder.
  3. Open command prompt in that folder and type the command like this: WslInstall.exe <distro_name> <distribution.tar.gz>. Always put a space between the two command arguments like between <distro_name> and <distribution.tar.gz>.
  4. After some seconds, that distribution will be installed. Confirm it with wslconfig.exe /list /all command. Also you may see a rootfs folder in that directory where you want to install.

How does it work

  • WslInstall: In the source code, the main function imports the WslRegisterDistribution function from wslapi.dll file. Then it passes the provided two commandline arguments in distroName and in tarGzFilename string parameters of that function respectively and the imported function installs that distribution. See details of WSL Functions and WSL_DISTRIBUTION_FLAGS.

wslinstall's Issues

This repo does not contain a Project file

Hey man,

first kudos on creating such a project. It is even referenced in some ubuntu official WSL guide.

But sorry to say, this repo is anything but well taken care of:

  • The project file you're referencing in your README.md is missing entirely and your tutorial about how to export the dll library is very poorly explained.
  • People that are interested in such a project are Linux guys who are forced to work with Windows and they more often than not don't know how dlltool or lib work. Granted, google helps, but what you're trying to do is very unclear.
  • Please add a requirements section, explaining how the toolchain should be configured to use such Makefiles. So far I understood you expect us to use Cygwin, but those makefiles still don't build properly with a properly chosen toolchain.

Does win11 can install Kubuntu?

I have tried a tons of times on installation of KDE desktop. I downloaded Ubuntu 20.04 from Microsoft Store and tried different way to install a KDE desktop. After following the steps and noticing the "finishing signs", all I can see is the blank and black console as before.
In the picture below, I clicked the sddm choice and restarted the apps because most tutorials requires us to reboot while it's just a app so I restarted the app.
Then I could only see empty console. Maybe I have installed it but I still don't know how to launch it. Or else, I simple didn't follow the right steps. Or maybe, Win11 is not capable of installing the KDE desktop.
But I DON'T KNOW THE REASON. Can someone help me?๐Ÿ™
