opensuse-guide.org's Issues

Suggestion: move from PHP to Markdown and Jekyll, serve with GitHub Pages

I would like to suggest an enhancement that I believe would make your life (our lives) easier.

Although your website is written in PHP, it shows only static content. Why don't you rewrite it using Markdown and Jekyll?

Doing that, you could serve it using GitHub Pages. Your GitHub repo would host both your source code and web site.

If you want to see it in action, take a look at:

I have already rewritten your website using Markdown and Jekyll, because I'm going to publish my derivative using GitHub Pages. First I converted all the PHP pages to Markdown pages (.md extension), now I'm going to translate the content to Brazilian Portuguese.

That's why I referenced a specific commit in the above link, because soon I'm going to start translating, but right on that commit my repo is just a fork of yours but converted to Markdown.

If you agree with moving to GitHub Pages, we can do just a "copy and paste" from that commit to your repo. Please let me know if you want me to do a pull request.

Also, you are able to use a custom domain with GitHub Pages, so you could keep using http://opensuse-guide.org/ (instead of moving to, let's say, https://cb400f.github.io/opensuse-guide.org/).

Thanks for the great content and keep up the good work!

Update to IRC server information in Appendix A

In Appendix A: Help and Docs, section A.3, is the following:

You can get help in realtime using IRC (Internet Relay Chat). The IRC-client Konversation is installed by default and preconfigured to join the #suse channel on the Freenode IRC network.

However, according to the IRC page on the openSUSE Wiki, linked in the same section:

Below is a list of well-known, registered openSUSE channels. Traditionally, the Freenode IRC network (on group server address irc.freenode.net) has been used. With operational changes at Freenode, the community has elected to move exclusively to, the Libera network (group server address irc.libera.chat) as of May 2021.

My impression is that changing the current text to say "Libera" instead of "Freenode" would be more than sufficient - the history, while dramatic, is not relevant to new users.

error in codec section?

Hi !

Today doing a review, I found in the codec section that it's suggested to add this repo:
zypper addrepo -f http://opensuse-guide.org/repo/openSUSE_Leap_42.2/ dvd
it's really the right link? Do you have a dvd repo in your server?

BTW I see that you have updated your guide! Then I have to do the same in the spanish one! ;)
