austen's Issues

Add sort to search

It should only come up if someone actually searches for something, and the options should be:

relevance | novel order

note about english spellings

Add a note about the spellings, English and original, so "chuse" not "choose" etc. This will probably go in frequencies and background.

Frequencies/javascript: Figure out a way to fix bootstrap collapse/tabs problem

The issue: When you click on a novel other than the first, the collapse feature does not work quite right.

The first tab works fine - when you click another tab to open, the first collapses

When you open another tab, it breaks - clicking another tab to open just opens it.

I think we'll need to add some kind of event so that when you switch tabs, the collapse/uncollapse settings are reset. The downside tot his is that when you click into a new tab, it will always default to the first set of options being opened, rather than keeping whatever was open open.

There may be a better way to do this!

? button for choosing direct/indirect/fid for all

Need button for choosing direct/indirect/FID for all - claims in background section only make sense with this capacity- frequency tables just show unique for direct speech.

Note: I think our rearrangement of the traits page takes care of this, see issue #42

Need to check with Laura white to make sure this is the case.

Word Frequency interface

Need button for choosing direct/indirect/FID for all—claims in Background only make sense with this capacity—frequency tables just show unique for direct speech (We changed how this was to be done, Karin needs to find her notes?)

Restyle search results

Decide on what needs to show, and format what remains. Make it as readable as possible.

Add some text explaining search

I think the search is confusing the way it is - I'd like to develop some text (perhaps it opens when clicking on a ? or something) that explains that one search result is one said tag. @lweakly's help would be useful.

Some search refinements

I've changed up the search page:

http://rosie.unl.edu/austen/search

I think the changes I need are mostly int he code as TODO's, but here's the list:

1: Only show the "x" next to "search documents" after something has been searched
2: likewise, only show the "sort by:" section if something has already been searched on
3: set a default for the relevancy/novel order - i.e. if it starts on relevancy, highlight that. (I tried to do this but failed)
4: Refinements to the subtitle:

When you first go to the page:

  • Displaying all 24896 results

When you have searched for a word or chosen a facet:

  • Your search returned 40 results
  • Your search returned 1 result
  • Your search returned 0 results

(I know it's a small thing, but it looks nicer and we'll reuse this code elsewhere!)

Missing Characters

Lady Catherine is missing from PP, Mrs. Elton is missing from E, and "Mrs. Price" is missing in MP.

This may be related to the missing character as characters in issue #40

Discuss possibilities for changing trait generation scripts.

@jduss4, @bzillig1 and @karindalziel need to discuss reworking the trait system. Some notes:

  • How to do traits of all novels? Perhaps we could leverage the solr search results, i.e. All Cads vs All NOT Cads
  • so we want to continue to do unique words or should we do all words or perhaps a combination?
  • is this generalizable to other projects?

Based on this discussion, we'll want to come up with a rough estimate of time and discuss with Kay.

Unique words error

Small errors caught by looking at unique words by character/narrator

Kitty s-his-name (split from one phrase, "what's-his-name")
Mr. Collins se, ennight, nnight (split from one word, "se'nnight")

Mrs. Gardiner alittle, beenhis, p (can't find "alittle" or "beenhis"; "p" is too common, can't find)

Add content to footer

also add some space to the bottom so anchors work. Even better would be javascript that automatically adds the necessary padding, but I can't find n example of that.

Another search thing

I lied, the other thing wasn't final.

The x next to the search term also clears the facets - it should just clear the search term but NOT the facets.

Also, searching for something automatically clears already selected facets.

If these are very time consuming to achieve, we may want to find some UI way to fix this....

Restyle novel chapter by chapter visualization of text

/visualizations/pride_and_prejudice/all

1: add a javascript switch to switch between full screen and smaller (toggle id: all_chapter_visualization class between "container" and "container-fluid"

1a: First, try styling that page to make it look OK without doing that

2: fix floating box at the left. It runs off the screen on smaller screens. Need to make it very compact, and perhaps need to find another way to keep it visible.

3: experiment with making the box collapsible to the left

4: restyle box (hide button, etc. )

Laura's notes to sort through

Austen Said edits—10/23/15

ADD ISSUE - (#49) Add note—where?—about the spellings, English and original—so “chuse” not “choose,” etc. Perhaps in Background on note on Text?

Background (edits)

  • DONE - 1st paragraph, take out second quotation mark: “she asked,” ‘if…” should be “she asked, ‘if”
  • DONE - Under Questions Left Hanging, indent the quotation from the International Society, starting “Free Indirect Speech”
  • DONE - Under Focalization, change last word from “narrators” to “narrator”
  • Under Personography, where it says “Adventures in FID [link]” make it a link and take out the [link]
  • DONE - Under Adventures in FID, also indent the Barthes quotation (“Irony acts…”)
  • DONE - At the end of this section, cut the two notes about Carmen’s contributions—where are they, by the way? If she doesn’t get them to us, we’ll do without and can add later. (could not find what this refers to)
  • DONE - Under Text, make it “the University of Adelaide,” not “The University . . . “
  • DONE - Under Going Forward, where it says “see Further Reading [link]” make the link and cut the word [link]
  • DONE - Under Further Reading, use hanging indents for all the bibliographic entries

Word Frequencies

  • DONE - “Narrator” should be in top personography with characters
  • MAKE ISSUE - (#50) “Narrator as characters” should go before “characters as characters”
  • MAKE ISSUE - (#50) What order are the indirect diction people in? Can size be smaller? (smaller size is done) (Need to look into ordering)
  • MAKE ISSUE - (#51) Missing “characters as characters” in PP sector (waiting on carmen's edits -KMD)
  • DONE - Missing traits of age, marital status, class in all
  • MAKE ISSUE - (#52) Need button for choosing direct/indirect/FID for all—claims in Background only make sense with this capacity—frequency tables just show unique for direct speech (We changed how this was to be done, Karin needs to find her notes?)
  • DONE - Directions say the results show at the bottom but they are to the side at the top
  • DONE - “Lady Catherine” is missing from characters in PP, “Mrs. Elton” is missing in E, and “Mrs. Price” is missing in MP
  • MAKE ISSUE - (#53) See sheets for small edits to the names (Not sure which sheet this is referring to)
  • MAKE ISSUE - (#54) Put in note about proper names showing up in the results uncapitalized. (May need to edit XML)

Alphabetize characters

What order are the indirect diction people in?

Brian will have to add the first name, last name fields on his next transform first, so I am assigning this to him first. then it will move to @jduss4 to incorporate.

Interface changes to selection of word frequencies

Right now it goes Characters/Character Type/Sex/Indirect Diction.

The new order will be:

Character Direct Speech

Include Narrator in this section as a regular character. Sort Alphabetically.

Character Indirect Diction

collapse all "character x as character y" characters into "Character x indirect diction". "Narrator as Character x" entries should stay the same. Narrator as character should go first, otherwise sort alphabetically. Possibly make these smaller? (play around with interface and size)

Traits

All traits will follow

Add a section for "all novels" which will include combined traits. will talk about with @jduss4 and Brian. See issue #41

Redesign search?

The search is getting crazy. Possibly rethink it, using a search/browse paradigm?

Possibly study blacklight, but this is a unique search

Final (?) search weirdness

I made some changes to austen in my latest push to the karin branch. I've almost got the search like I want it, with the following exception: When I search for a phrase, it is defaulting to id (novel) sort, rather than relevancy. It is doing this because I changed the default sort in the application controller. I did that because I want the default sort to be id if there is no word search. There needs to be some mechanism that tells it to default to relevancy sort only if there is also a word search.

Sorry if this is confusing, ask me tomorrow, I just wanted to get it down before I forgot.
