keypress's Introduction

Linux Typewriter

If you want to make some kind of screencast that features keyboard typing sounds, this might come in handy. Get the script, run keypress.py and pump up your volume.

Requirements

  • Python

  • python-xlib (On Debian-based, install with sudo apt-get install python-xlib)

  • aplay command line player, but you really can dump in anything you want, see keypress.py

Rip-off!!!

Yes, this was adopted from Sayan “Riju” Chakrabarti (sayanriju).

Why didn’t you just fork it?

Good question, guess it just didn’t occur to me :)

What’s changed?

The first time I looked at the code, I couldn’t really figure out what was going on. There was a senatra web server acting as a proxy that all the keypresses would go through which I didn’t understand. Not to say that wasn’t the correct approach, but it wasn’t the approach I needed/wanted. I did some looking on threading and tried my best at getting each call to aplay working so that there wasn’t a delay.

Can it play different sounds for different keys?

The original one that sayanriju made could, and this one will eventually.

keypress's Issues

Subscribe to event instead of polling

I came to this repo after a quick googling, so probably many others my come here too. I cleaned the code a little bit and then realised we were constantly polling, which seemed not OK.

I googled for an alternative, copy-pasted here and there, removed code and finally got something working for me. Pointing here to the code figarocorso#1 before opening a PR because it changes the script from top to bottom.

How to add keys in ignore list?

I use i3 and my right buttons (alt, control), super and capslock call the sound when a press, i want to add him to ignore list. How can i do this?

Multiple sounds play per keypress

I can't figure this out, but every time I press a key, I get multiple sounds playing. Looking at the code, I don't see how this could be happening, except if query_keymap() is doing something funny. I might need to get someone that knows more about python and Xlib.display to take a look at this bug.

Use better typewriter sound

The typewriter this code originally came with kind of sucks compared to other projects like qwertick. I'll try to get my hands on the sound that qwertick uses.

Play sound only on key down

If a key is held down while this script is running, the sound will keep playing nonstop. This is extremely annoying and makes the script unusable. The script should play a sound on key down instead of constantly while any key is pressed.
