Yes, this is an unfortunate change which can break clean upgrade path in some scenarios, but since this was a minor version bump and we are still in pre-v1 stage, such changes are acceptable as stated in semantic versioning manifesto.
In 0.19.0 we removed user management and install exporter as a predefined user. The change was merged in #142 and mentioned in CHANGELOG.md and release notes for version 0.19.0.
Additionally, we still use those variables internally, but prefixed with an underscore, which means you don't need to remove binary, but change:
node_exporter_system_group to _node_exporter_system_group
from ansible-node-exporter.
