Contributing

If you would like to contribute to one of our repositories, first identify the scale of what you would like to contribute. If it is small (grammar/spelling or a bug fix) feel free to start working on a fix. If you are submitting a feature or substantial code contribution, please discuss it with the team and ensure it follows the product roadmap.

  • Fork it (https://github.com/code4romania/code4.ro/fork)
  • Create your feature branch (git checkout -b feature/fooBar)
  • Commit your changes (git commit -am 'Add some fooBar')
  • Push to the branch (git push origin feature/fooBar)
  • Create a new Pull Request

Getting Started

First, you must have node.js and Hugo installed on your system.

  1. git clone https://github.com/code4romania/code4.ro to clone this repository
  2. cd code4.ro
  3. npm install to install dependencies
  4. npm run dev to build the frontend (using Webpack)
  5. hugo serve to start a local server
    • This automatically runs hugo (with no arguments) behind the scenes, wihch builds the website and puts all the files in a directory called public. This directory is then statically served.
    • If your URL is any other than localhost (e.g. you're serving the website form a cloud machine), you must use the --baseURL [your url here]. This is because the website uses absolute paths in hyperlinks, and it must know the URL from which it is served.

How It Works

Hugo is a static website engine. This means we write source files, which are used to generate HTML, JavaScript, and CSS, which we then serve statically. There is no backend involved whatsoever.

code4.ro's Issues

Add content-related og:image

Is your feature request related to a problem? Please describe.
We're only showing a single generic og:image, regardless of content.

Describe the solution you'd like
Where available, pages should feature their relevant featured image as the og:image. If there is no relevant featured image, it should fallback to the current generic image.

Additional context
This change needs to be done in layouts/_default/baseof.html.

Create CMS for website

We will need a CMS - it is unrealistic to be able to update the website in GitHub directly. As we will have more people coming on the team, who have to have access to this and none of them are tech savvy to this level, this needs to exist.

Editable areas:

  • homepage
  • standalone pages
  • blog posts
    etc.

Clean up page custom urls

Once #4870 is fixed upstream, url should be dropped from pages' front-matter and replaced with the commented out slug in the following files:

  • content/about/index.en.md
  • content/about/index.ro.md
  • content/code-of-conduct/index.en.md
  • content/code-of-conduct/index.ro.md
  • content/community/index.en.md
  • content/community/index.ro.md
  • content/donate/error/index.en.md
  • content/donate/error/index.ro.md
  • content/donate/index.en.md

  2. Click on 'Doneaza' button
  3. Make a donation using PayPal

Add pipeline build previews

Is your feature request related to a problem? Please describe.
There's currently no easy way to preview the outcome of changes in a branch / pull request without building it locally.

Describe the solution you'd like
An updated pipeline that would allow us to preview builds coming from (ordered by priority):

  1. branches in this repository;
  2. pull requests from this repository;
  3. pull requests from forked repositories.

Describe alternatives you've considered
Netlify does something similar, but integrating this would require maintaining two different build definitions.

Additional context
Travis CI has some security restrictions on pull requests that would make this not work on pull requests coming from forked repositories.
