This is Code for Tulsa's hack of a GitHub repository as a place to connect attendees of our Civic Hackers Happy Hour held in Washington, D.C. on July 22nd, 2013. The Happy Hour was held for attendees of the White House's Open Government/Civic Hacking Champions of Change event on July 23rd, 2013, and other civic hacking folks in and around the greater D.C. area.
Seeing as DC has no shortage of Open Transit Apps, and one of the better transit systems in the country, what better way to get in the mood than to start hacking your travel plans?
I imagine most of us will be arriving via Metro so a great place to look is the DC Metro Developer Resources page for a list of their supported Apps- http://developer.wmata.com/Application_Gallery
The Metro is just one option of course and the best way to find which options are closest to your location is to check out this tool created with Open Transit Data- http://transitnearme.com/
It will list everything from DC Circulator Busses, Streetcars (in a few more months maybe...),Zipcars, and Bikeshares.
Speaking of which, (and weather permitting of course) some may opt to take advantage of the well-established bike-share system- http://www.capitalbikeshare.com/ where you can search for nearby stations on the official map- http://www.capitalbikeshare.com/stations
or through a great tool built using OpenTripPlanner called http://bikeplanner.org/
Spotcycle is a great mobile app built using the same data.
Should anyone want to take a look at the data under the hood some great resources can be found at http://mobilitylab.org/. These guys have hosted some legendary hack-a-thons and are the brains behind many of the apps listed above. Check out their Github page for more details- https://github.com/MobilityLab
