commons-app-documentation's Issues

location upload fails

I used the commons-app several years on a motorola smartphone. Now i got a new xiaomi smart phone mi 10. I installed the commons app, gave location rights to the app, the camera, the gallery app and google photos. But the upload begins with the question, weather the location is on earth and after the upload the location is missed in the commons. Is this a bug in the app or in xiaomi or is this a dau-issue?

Quick start for developers could be updated

I just did a clean install of Android Studio, and encountered the following three issues that had to be resolved before the app would compile and launch:

  1. Warning messages:
    [XmlResourcesTransformer] No mapping for: android/support/FILE_PROVIDER_PATHS
Failed to find Build Tools revision 29.0.2

Steps to fix were:

  • Open Settings > Appearance & Behaviour > System Settings > Android SDK > SDK Tools
  • Click on Show Package Details
  • Go to Android SDK Build Tools, select version 29.0.2 and click apply, then finish
  1. Warning message:
Failed to find Platform SDK with path: platforms;android-28

Steps to fix were:

  • Open Settings > Appearance & Behaviour > System Settings > Android SDK > SDK Platforms
  • Click on Show Package Details
  • Go to Android 9.0 (Pie), select Android SDK Platform 28 and click apply, then finish
  1. Warning message:
    Missing NDK version 21.0.6113669

Steps to fix were:

  • Open Settings > Appearance & Behaviour > System Settings > Android SDK > SDK Tools
  • Click on Show Package Details
  • Go to NDK (Side by side), select 21.0.6113669 and click apply, then finish

These three steps could be combined into the following instructions for the quick start documentation:

  • Open Settings > Appearance & Behaviour > System Settings > Android SDK
  • Click on Show Package Details
  • Go to SDK Tools > Android SDK Build Tools, and select version 29.0.2
  • Go to SDK Tools > NDK (Side by side), and select 21.0.6113669
  • Go to SDK Platforms > Android 9.0 (Pie), and select Android SDK Platform 28
  • Click apply, then finish

In Student steps, do not link to a Phabricator Maniphest overview page with no parameters

https://github.com/commons-app/commons-app-documentation/blob/master/android/Students.md currently only states:

Create a proposal on Phabricator (button "Create Task").

This is unspecific and leads to tasks based on copy-and-paste, and to missing project tags on created tasks. Can you please change this to

Create a proposal on Phabricator (more info about Wikimedia Phabricator) by using the link under "Submit your proposal as a task on Wikimedia Phabricator".

or something like that? Thanks for considering.

Rename repo

By default when cloning the repo it uses the repo name as the folder name. As "documentation" is a common word it might not be the best name for the folder as it doesn't communicate much about what the repo is about.

How about renaming the repo to commons-app-documentation? I believe this shouldn't be an issue given that the repo is fairly new.

Should we drop iOS from the docs repo?

Given that the iOS app didn't take off (unfortunately) and that there aren't any docs related to iOS in this repo at all, should we remove the folder and the mention in the README ? ๐Ÿค”

Better documentation for the Leaderboard

The documentation on the leaderboard needs to be improved. What does "upload or used or nearby" mean?

How to see a leaderboard of users by edit count similar to this now inactive table or see a user's rank of that? One would expect it since this issue was closed and now I don't know if the edit count is used at all (not that it is a good metric) and as far as I can see it can't display the number of edits.

How are Achievement ranks calculated? Is there a way to configure it? Maybe at some point one could have the leaderboard prioritize images used and in specific images used on Wikipedia, not just on some Wikidata items or Wikibooks that nobody reads.

Some potential suggestions for the Commons app depend on these questions.

It would be great if once things have improved there is a bot/script that creates some pages on Wikimedia Commons so people on desktop can also see these leaderboards and to have a web UI for the API as discussed here. That would be a new issue at the commons app repo I guess if at all since it's only about making something available in the app also available on desktop.

Lastly, it would be better if it displayed more things like, for example, number of files uploaded, number of uploaded files used on Wikipedia, number of used self-created files, total pageviews of the user's created categories, etc as well as the number of edits per user. Please let me know if there are any issues about these things.
