silentpatchbully's Introduction

SilentPatch for Bully: Scholarship Edition

This game, which shares a lot of the internals with GTA games, performs fairly well in its PC incarnation as is. However, it's more than likely that you have at some point spotted the amount of complaints Windows 10 users have about the game, or maybe you have encountered crashes yourself.

SilentPatch attempts to fix Bully memory management completely, so it behaves in the same way independent of Windows version. This is not the only fix included, however - most notably, it attempts to improve gameplay experience by improving frame pacing, as well as fixing a few other issues.

Fixes featured in this plugin:

Crash and bug fixes

  • Collision loading code has been improved, fixing occasional crashes on initial game load
  • Fixed game's objects pool usage, fixing possible crashes
  • Fixed an occasional crash when starting Nutcrackin' or Music Class
  • Fixed numerous instances of memory corruption on game exit
  • Fixed an use-after-free in sound streaming code, causing a rare crash when talking to people
  • Fixed handle leaks in audio code, preventing handles from accumulating during the game
  • Fixed several memory leaks in audio code, preventing out of memory crashes during extended play sessions
  • Made memory manager workarounds toggleable via the INI file - disabled by default, to be removed in the future
  • Frame Limiter has been made much more precise, so the game should lock at exactly 30FPS now (as opposed to stock limiter being prone to dropping frames a lot)
  • Fixed an issue where game would use more CPU than required when minimized

Quality of life improvements

  • An option to change FPS cap has been added to SilentPatchBully.ini file (game defaults to 30FPS)
  • FILE_FLAG_NO_BUFFERING flag has been removed from IMG reading functions - potentially speeding up streaming

Compilation requirements

Project is supposed to build out of the box with Visual Studio 2017.

Submitting feedback

Since this is a public beta release, you may encounter crashes. Because of this, MiniDumper utility has been shipped together with SilentPatch. In case of a crash, a .dmp file will be created in your game directory.

If you want to report it as a bug (any feedback is very much appreciated), first ENSURE YOU HAVE AN UNMODDED GAME (texture mods are fine, scripts - not so much). You can report a bug (.dmp file + a brief explanation on what you were doing when the game crashes) in the Issues page.

silentpatchbully's Issues

Crash on Startup Win10

Hi,

First off thanks putting out the patches, love playing old games.

So installed Steam version from scratch, downloaded Build 2 of the Silentbully and copied across the files. I've changed the FPS to 0 (though tried without changing).

Every startup gets to the loading screen but crashes out before 'new game', load etc. I've also tried Build 1 and no joy either, same result. I've also edited Bully.exe to run as admin in XP SP 2/3 etc. with teh same result.

I've uploaded a zip of the dump files created after bin out. Would appreciate any help if possible.

Thanks

Harley

Still keeps crashing

Hello,
Before I had applied the patch, the game could be played until 20 min or so, before crashing. But after I had applied the patch, it cannot be played even for 20 min. It works for hardly 5 min... you get the point ;)
However, the graphics and framerate has improved since I've applied the patch, so thanks for that!
P.S. I am not able to attach the .DMP file here

Crashes on startup

Crashes on startup with fresh install after loading, just before getting to the main menu.

Preppies Vandalized (+one week later)

Hey,

Installed patch about a week ago, game ran better that without it. A few crashes since then, so I save after I do basically anything (every 10 minutes or so) and I think that improves the chances of the game not crashing. Not sure what that has to do with it. I ran the game for about 3-4 hours tonight.

Anyway, long story short is I get all the way through Preppies Vandalized in Chapter 5, just after taking the picture of the burning trophies. On my way back, I head left at the fork you come across after taking the pic because there's a rubber band at the end. About halfway through the path, the game crashes and did so twice in the same spot.

I'll retry the mission again and not take the path to see if its related or not.

Crashes on a New Save

I completely refreshed my Win 10 PC a few days ago, meaning I wiped pretty much everything off the hard drive except the OS.

I downloaded Bully and installed the latest Silent Patch to it. However, i've also downloaded a texture mod for icons that replaces PC icons with the Anniversary Edition ones, but I don't believe this would contribute to the crashes in any way.

I started a new save, and it works fine up until i'm inside the school to do the first mission. The first crash is weirdly in a specific area a few steps in front of the inside of the school entrance. This is the error message I got when I crashed in that spot:

assertion

I can actually avoid that specific crash spot if I hug the left wall and go into the left hallways and in to the main stairs, but this leads to a new crash if I touch the mission marker in the office.

These are the .dmp files I got from the first and second crash.

Crash when loading game

Description

Loading an existing save game after running the game for a while results in a crash to desktop. I've only encountered this issue after playing the game for at least 30 minutes or so. Loading an existing save prior to this works as expected. Once this crash has occurred, the game will no longer launch until Stream is restarted.

Steps to recreate

  1. Launch game
  2. Load an existing save game
  3. Leave running for 30 minutes or so (exact timing unknown, all crashes have been encountered after playing for some time, however)
  4. Load an existing save game from the start menu

Additional Details

Stops working afte the 1st cutscene

I tried running it in 30fps/60fps, but in both cases it didn't work. Exactly the same as #22 ,but the game stops working after phrase "Welcome to Bullworth". I tried switching audio settings ( from 96kHz 24 bit, to 48 khz 16 bit), but it also didn't help.

UPD: funny thing - when I switched audio settings to optical output, game started working as it should (but cutscene still in the beginning doesn't load), even though it works just from time to time. I tried again to adjust my 2 different headsets by connecting them with soundcard and without them, switching settings, although result is the same.

Balls of Snow bug

Hi, i found a bug in the mission ''Balls of Snow'', i can't beat that mission due to the game not reloading snowballs. I'm with the 1.200 patch and it's a clean version of the game, if someone knows some fix let me know, please.

Still encountering random crashes

The game appeared more stable with your patch, but the deeper I progressed the more random crashes I started to encountered. I've joined all my dumps hoping it can help.

Bully.exe.20180714162426.zip
Bully.exe.20180714165256.zip

Here's where I remember encountering each of them.

  1. During Chapter 1 mission "Help Gary" while fighting bullies in the school's bus/bike garage area
  2. While biking in that same area, as I was about to leave school grounds (Chapter 2, not in a mission)
  3. While simply walking in that same area again, I had prefects running after me (again, Chapter 2, a in any mission)
  4. During the intro cutscene of Chapter 3 mission "Miracle on Bullworth St."
  5. While being in the Dragon's Wing Comics shop basement (Chapter 3, not in any mission)

High frame rate issues

There's supposedly a number of high frame rate issues related to this game... I was wondering if it would be possible to fix them directly or even workaround them; i.e. automatically cap the FPS in specific situations.

What do you think?

Bully keeps crashing still.

First, i have a non-steam version of the game by Mr DJ. I was experiencing crashes last night and I downloaded this patch and my game worked ok after I downloaded the patch. But when I got the 2nd modupdater thingy my Bully keeps exiting out by itself but the icon is still on the taskbar. After a while, the icon disappears too. I try to click on the icon but it wont open. I tried to reinstall the patch, it worked but then the same thing happened. here are the .dmp files.

Stuck on loading screen

Basically the same problem as #1. Also I had some old savegame, which I tried playing. I was in the dorm room and everything works fine until I try to leave the dorm because it gets stuck on the loading screen.

Game started crashing frequently in Chapter 5

I've been replaying Bully and the game has worked fine for the most part up until now. I had a single crash in Chapter 2 with Movie Tickets, but since then it's been fine.
I got up to chapter 5 yesterday and completed all the missions up to Go see the Principal (except for The Collector and Smash it Up). Today, I loaded up the game and went to play The Collector and it kept crashing after a few minutes. This kept happening. I skipped the mission and slept, then went to do Go See the Principal, and it crashed halfway through the cutscene. It seems to happen a minute or two after loading a save, as I can seem to prolong how often it happens by reloading a save (though this is a useless fix if I intend to do any missions).

I have no idea why it has started doing this, I changed none of the files between today and yesterday, and the crashing wasn't a problem before.

The attached file is my most recent crash, which occured shortly after starting the mission "Breaking In Part 1"

Game doesn't launch while streaming

Maybe a problem with OBS?!

The game launch with the patch installed while im not streaming, the problem is when I try to start it during streaming it just don't start..

Crashing frequently on Chapter 5

Worked like a charm on previous chapters (got an average of 2- 3 hours playtime). Crashed once in each chapter, but Chapter 5 has been unplayable.
I just got done with the "Gym is Burning" mission and ever since then it keeps crashing every time I try to start another mission (getting about 15 mins avg playtime before it crashes).
I'm playing on the Steam version of the game; 60 FPS cap has been enabled, Shadows off; No compatibility settings enabled; Patch is up to date.

3D positional audio is broken on some configurations (everyone keeps shouting)

Hopefully this is not beyond the scope of this project, but there's a longstanding bug with Bully: Scolarship Edition on PC, which is that on some audio configurations and hardware, the 3D positional audio is completely broken.

For reference, in the PS2 version of the game, the 3D positional audio gives a virtual "surround" effect to NPC voices and sound effects, which are positioned around you and get progressively quieter the farther away from you.

In the PC version of the game, on some hardware and software configurations, ambient sounds sound hollow, are positioned in the middle of the sound stage, and sound very loud independently of the distance between the playable character and the sound's source. Footsteps, voices and other sounds can be heard at max volume across the map, which quickly becomes unbearable due to the constant NPC chatter.

A telling example of this during the "Race the Vale" mission in chapter 2: on affected configurations, the NPCs that cheer for the player can be heard yelling "WOW! EXCELLENT! WOW! WOW! EXCELLENT!" in a loop throughout the mission. On working configurations, those words are much quieter and can only be heard near the NPCs.

The usual workaround is to set the in-game audio mode to "Stereo", and changing the sound card's bit depth, speaker configuration and/or sampling rate. However, this doesn't appear to fix the 3D positioning problem, but merely to reduce the amount of background chatter.

I have two different sound devices on my computer, and only one of them is affected, so I've experimented quite extensively with the configurations. Here's what I found:

BROKEN CONFIGURATIONS

  • Realtek High Definition Audio: all configurations (16-bit and 24-bit, 44.1kHz and 48kHz, Stereo and 5.1 speaker configurations), in-game "Stereo" and "Surround" settings. Problem is subjectively worse on "Surround".

  • Blue Yeti Stereo USB: default bit depth and sampling rate (16-bit 48kHz), in-game "Surround" setting.

WORKING CONFIGURATION

  • Blue Yeti Stereo USB: default bit depth and sampling rate (16-bit 48kHz), in-game "Stereo" setting.

PC SPECS

  • Windows 10 Pro (1709)
  • AMD Ryzen 5 1600X
  • 16GB DDR4 RAM
  • NVIDIA GTX 1070Ti 8GB
  • Bully: Scolarship Edition 1.200 (Steam) w/ Silent Patch Build 1
  • Realtek HD Audio (Realtek driver 6.0.1.8382) & Blue Yeti Stereo USB (Generic Microsoft USB Audio driver 10.0.16299.15)

Higher FPS == Faster Game speed

So very simple, for me loading the dll is not a problem.
But I've noticed, that the speed is increasing as i increase the fps…
so for example…
I set the FPS limit to 0 and then i get about 1600 to 2000 fps in main menu. (vsync is off btw.)
this results in the time that the menu waits for input is run through in the shortest possible time and thus my game starts almost immediately after startup, without me giving it any input.
also in game the time passes way faster. with about 60 fps it is hardly noticable, but with like 200 fps, you see the difference.

I could record it, if that would be of any help.

Crashed just as fast.

i downloaded your file. unpacked and brought everything over too steam- steamapps -common - bully scholorship edition. drag drop. started up bully , got from the school office too the bike store by the beach started a favor mission..crash. i am a little new too bug fixes only game i really tampered with them for was skyrim but it was easy fixes. So anyways then i restarted it. played flawless for about 3 hours then again stopped working. (bully.exe has topped working) it wont let me send a report it.

Bully stuck on loading screen of "Welcome to Bullworth"

#40 #3 #1

I installed Build 2 of the patch because I had problems launching the game. Now the main menu and the first cutscene works however my game gets stuck after the cutscene in the loading screen of Welcome to bullworth. I hear the audio of the game before it finally crashes.
I have the Rockstar Launcher version.

Cursor In-game

My mouse cursor shows up in-game and it's not in sync with the cursor with bully ( Ex. Biology)

Any fix on this?

Game crashing after New Save, or "Christmas Is Here"

I aint sure which one causes it, but i created a few new saves before "Christmas Is Here", the game was fine with having those saves, but after christmas is here the game now keeps crashing after a few seconds of walking arround, and i can complete a few tasks sometimes but it crashes a bit afterwards, sometimes it crashes just by walking a little, it could be because i loaded 3 different slots a few seconds before coming back to the save at Christmas Is Here and then saved again

Varied issues

A couple crash reports generated whilst playing through the game.
No additional mods are used.
Additionally, whilst performing purposeful glitches with the skateboard and a bicycle, the patch itself gave a crash trace log exposing the 'D:\Users\Adrian\Doc[...]' directory names on the maintainers computer, alongside the code expression that caused the crash, as shown in the screenshot below.

still random crashes

I still get random crashes, they aren't as frequent but it still happens please try your best to fix this in the next version

Is this going to be updated???

This patch still isn't preventing crashes as it should be and it's been a while since this was updated. The game crashes even LESS without this patch.

Random crash

Sometimes when i do something, the game random crash when i using the Mod menu mod

Still Crashing :(

Have tried the first patch it didn't work. Tried the second one, still doesn't. Crashes just after first cutscene when loading into the game.
Bully Crashes.zip

Cut-scenes ending short with high fps

I noticed while playing with fps capped at 144 that cut-scenes would always end before they are supposed to.

Setting the FPSLimit back at 30 seemed to have fixed the issue.

Edit : Seems like this is caused by game calculations being based on frames and higher fps actually changes lots of things. Not sure if it can be fixed.

Edit 2: Seems like there is already an issue regarding this, so I'm closing this.

Stuck on screen "Welcome to Bullworth"

I installed the patch and was able to go into the main menu settings and changed them to 1920 x 1080 and set anti-aliasing to 8 also set shadows to high. I choose start the game and it freezes, in task manager its says "not responding". If there is any fix to this or a future fix to this please let me know! Thank you

Crashing while on a mission at chapter 5

While using your silientpatch. The game had no crashes until chapter 2 that crashed but sometimes
the game doesn't crash and sometimes it crashes pls fix this because I am almost done finishing the game. Pls make build 3
