watoolkit's Introduction

⚠️ CHANGE OF OWNERSHIP: The original WAToolkit Chrome extension published on the Chrome Web Store is no longer owned by Cristian Perez, which is the owner of this repository. Current and future versions published with the name "WAToolkit" on the Chrome Web Store will not come from me.

As a consequence, this repository will soon change name and a new extension will be published under that new name. It will still be open source and it will be linked from this respository. Meanwhile you can still safely install this extension manually following the instructions bellow as always.

WAToolkit

WAToolkit

Never ever miss a WhatsApp notification again while you are on your desktop computer! This extension makes it possible to receive WhatsApp notifications even when there is no WhatsApp tab or Chrome window at all open. This way you will never miss a message again while working on your PC.

Features

Enables always-on desktop notifications: Chrome will run in background mode permanently, keeping track and showing your WhatsApp notifications instantly. You can click on the notifications to go directly to the relevant chat.

Adds a convenient WhatsApp button to the toolbar: It includes the number of unread messages always visible. You can hover the mouse over the icon and you will see a summary of your unread conversations in a tooltip. In addition, the icon will become orange if there's some kind of connectivity issue with your phone. You can still hide the button if you want, just right click on it and select Hide button.

Ensures you only have one instance of WhatsApp Web open at any time: That way you can focus on the right tab in any situation. Moreover, you won't be bothered with WhatsApp's exit confirmation messages any more.

Extremely lightweight and fast: Coded with performance in mind.

Installation instructions

The recommended installation path is directly from Chrome Web Store, because you will benefit from a 2-click install and auto-updates. If for any reason you would like to install the last version of WAToolkit manually, you can follow these steps:

Windows:

  1. Right click here and select Save link as... Save sources.zip temporarily to your desktop.
  2. Unzip sources.zip to a permanent location of your choice, for example to *%UserProfile%\watoolkit*
  3. Click the Chrome menu icon Chrome menu on the browser toolbar and select More tools > Extensions.
  4. Check the Developer mode checkbox in the top right of the Extensions page.
  5. Click on Load unpacked extensions... and select the path where you saved the sources in step 2.

Sadly you will be annoyed with a warning message which you will have to Cancel every time you restart Chrome with developer mode activated.

Mac OS X or Linux:

  1. Right click here and select Save link as... Save watoolkit.crx temporarily to your desktop.
  2. Click the Chrome menu icon Chrome menu on the browser toolbar and select More tools > Extensions.
  3. Locate watoolkit.crx on your desktop and drag the file onto the Extensions page.
  4. Review the requested permissions in the dialog that appears and click Install.

Frequent questions

• How to install it? Please follow the installation instructions.

• How to use it? To start using WhatsApp Web, install this extension and click on the Chrome toolbar button with the T icon. If you are not logged in to WhatsApp, you must follow the instructions and scan the QR code with your phone. Remember to check the Keep me signed in checkbox so that your session is not closed automatically, or you may miss notifications.

• I cannot see any notification, what's happening? If the toolbar T icon is orange, there might be some connectivity issue with your phone. If you still cannot see WhatsApp notifications, please refer to the official support thread to solve the issue: http://www.whatsapp.com/faq/web/28080004

Motivation

As all the software I make in my free time, I created WAToolkit because I wanted the functionality it offers for myself. My first need was being able to watch all WhatsApp notifications on my desktop computer, even without a WhatsApp tab opened (or any Chrome window at all), and that was its first feature. As the extension has raised some interest, I'll be maintaining WAToolkit and new features will probably be added in the future. Be sure to star this project on GitHub, report bugs or suggest new ideas.

Permissions

The message shown by Google Chrome for the requested permissions is far from the real needs of the extension, but the permissions are technically required for the following reasons:

• Read and change your data on all whatsapp.com sites: Required to create the background page that holds an active WhatsApp session.

• Read your browsing history: Required to detect whether an active WhatsApp session exists among the tabs you are browsing, avoiding conflicts with the background page.

License and contributing

WAToolkit is free and open source. The source code is released under The GNU General Public License v3.0. Contributions are very welcome.

Legal

WhatsApp is a trademark of WhatsApp Inc., registered in the U.S. and other countries. WAToolkit is an independent project developed by Cristian Perez and has no relationship to WhatsApp or WhatsApp Inc.

watoolkit's Issues

Persistent Chrome notifications

Copied from a comment of a user in Chrome Web Store:

Ok, since the system tray won't work, I have another idea, that might be achievable: So when a whatsapp Notification is shown, there will also be the Chrome notifications bell shown in the system tray. Usually (for example when using pushbullet) this bell persists there until the notification has been read. But unfortunately whatsapp web kills this notification bell after the whatsapp notification timed out. Maybe you could somehow keep the bell active. Would that be possible? Thanks for your effort :-)

Make the badge mute-aware

From Chrome Web Store user:

Should be mute-aware
Hi, great plugin, but it needs to distinguish between muted and unmuted threads and exclude the former from the badge. At least as an option. As it is it's worse than just keeping the WhatsApp window open. Thanks!

Add a checkbox to disable background notifications

In the extension no options are selected, they are highlighted in gray. You can not select the check box to receive notifications.

You can not specify that WhatsApp Web runs in the background and notifications will be permanently displayed until you have read it.

But the idea is good. Please continue!

Learning

Hi Great Extension.
I m studying the source to learn how to do this type of things.
How you know when someone receives a new message ?
I looked at the code and simply cant spot it.

Thanks for your great work.

Chrome icon context menu action

The WAToolkit entry in the context menu of the Chrome tray icon does open a new tab with chrome://extensions. Is it possible to change it to open a new tab with https://web.whatsapp.com/?

rightclicktraybar

Plugin overwrites default browser search

Since the last update WAToolkit redirects my search queries to site.watoolkit.com which then redirects the query to bing. This shouldnt be a feature and is not included in this recent commit history, could you please check that only you have access to your webstore account and nobody compromised it? Proxying and propably logging all search queries is a big privacy concern and seems malicious. Also it opens up the question what else this version of the plugin logs.

Feature request: Save / browse history

Clearing or deleting active chats on my mobilephone automatically deletes them on my browser at home ... although they were already received or displayed.

Is it possible to "save" them (or build a history) at my home / home-pc and keep track of all messages I got before, to review them later? Or is it possible to save desktop-notifications, sorted by sender / receiver, for a later review?

That would be nice!

i18n

I would help doing the i18n stuff, but I'm not quite sure how you wanted to do it and I never wrote a Chrome extension.
So, the Web Store Description is interazionalized by using a ton of chrome_web_store_description_xx_XX.txt files?
And for the rest, you intend to use message.json files? (cf. https://developer.chrome.com/extensions/i18n)
I can do French and German translations.
Or do you want to avoid i18n in order not to bloat the project?

Increase notification timeout

Reported by someone on Chrome Web Store, stating that the notification goes away too quickly.

Notification timeout
Is there a way to extend the notification timeout. It disappears too quickly.

Save messages to MySQL database

Hi.
Is it possible to enhance the extension in order to save messages to a MySQL database ( text and media ) and read back answers from the same MySQL database and push them to the corresponding phone ?
Regards.

ENH: Add option to forward message by calling an API POST

Hi,

Thank you for the cool project.

I'm looking to implement a way to forward every time I receive a new message on WhatsApp.
Would it be possible to add an option to POST to an API every time a new message is received? This would include both the sender, the time and the full text. I guess it comes down to if the whole text is available in the notification from WhatsApp.

URL handler on web browser

I think WAToolkit is great. But I'm missing URL Handler feature.
Specially on Linux or Browser only. Cause WAToolkit using browser, right?

Like this URL:

whatsapp://send/?phone=11xxxxxxxxx&text=test
https://wa.me/11xxxxxxxxx?text=test
https://api.whatsapp.com/send/?phone=11xxxxxxxxx&text=test

On Windows, any popular browser + "Whatsapp Desktop" can do with nicely. If I click that URL, open directly to Whatsapp Desktop (as single instance application). And tadaaaa... Whatsapp Desktop already set URL handler on Windows OS.

On Linux or any other browser only environtment, i got this problem. Any idea? How to click that link, will open WAToolkit (without reloading if possible)? So only send that link to opened WAToolkit tab.

Any idea?

Publish your extension to Microsoft Edge Addons website

Microsoft Edge is the second most used browser on the web, making the browsing experience more flexible, offering many more services for users and optimized for Windows devices.

Microsoft Edge supports Chromium extensions, and you can publish your extensions to Microsoft Edge Add-ons website with minimal code changes. Find out more here.

If you have any more queries about porting Chrome extension to Microsoft Edge or anything else, you can contact the relevant teams whose links are given here.

Let me know if this was helpful. I am happy to help you with more details.

Migrate to Manifest V3

Hi,
Since you said you would commit more updates and rename this repo, can you at least update current version to v3 manifest before 2023, as it wills top to work
Best regards

Publish extension on Opera add-ons

Because Opera is built on top of Chromium, you could easily publish the extension under https://addons.opera.com/. But there are a few issues to work out:

  • the newTabUrl is either opera://startpage/#speeddial or opera://startpage/#discover
  • the #watOptions fragment is set only rarely, so we'd have to find another trick
  • References to "Chrome" should be removed, e.g. "Rate WAToolkit in Chrome Web Store"
  • ...

Are you willing to publish WAToolkit on Opera add-ons?

user-agent on Chromium

Is there a way to enable Whatsapp Web for Chromium users?
I think it should not be complicated to add a user-agent switcher, so chromium users can use it. It just needs so send Chrome as user-agent, when opening web.whatsapp.com
