Create style guide page

Can you create a new page to act as the style guide?

I've done this on other pages, e.g. my portfolio site. Foundation does this automatically for out-of-the-box foundation sites.

Essentially, it's a page that demonstrates the style conventions of the site: both how to implement them, if you are looking at the html, and how they render, if you are looking at the page in the browser. It shouldn't require any additional design, and shouldn't be linked to from anywhere w/i the site; it's just meant to demonstrate how the css framework is implemented.

Makes it a lot easier to hand off the design to another designer who doesn't know your conventions, and also makes it easier to iterate on designs independent of content.

Probably will just require copy/pasting components from the site into a new page at /style-guide/index.html, such as:

  • headings, banners, and other block tags
  • links, buttons, and other inline content
  • basic forms
  • tables
  • grids

fix drop downs on map page

I did some hacks to get the map on the maps page, and as a result, the drop downs don't render well.

Thoughts on best approaches to fixing this?

shrink header

Carter Center thinks not enough screen real estate is shown on the first site view. Suggest shrinking the header and removing the header text (lorem ipsum...)

Advanced Search

I've tightened up the layout some, added the correct search terms, and changed the name to 'Browse'.

They don't think the browse feature is intuitive enough, and that it still takes up too much vertical real estate. The names of the search terms are now final, but they are also longer than I anticipated.

One idea that was floated was to change the browsable terms into drop downs: one for Theme, one for Doc Type, etc.

This might require exploring ways to do multiselect in dropdowns, which select2 jquery plugin provides nice functionality for.

In any case, I can handle the multiselect, if you can work on the redesign. Drop downs might be one good approach. I'm open to other ideas as well.

build new search form

On landing page, replace 'View our collection of Documents' blue section with a search form modeled after the following:

search

Title: 'Search Documents in CongoMines Document Library'

Below, add a small button for 'View all Documents in Library' that links to congo-mines/library

Document Theme, Doc Type, and Source Type should be toggle-able (allowing users to search for, e.g. all environmental documents relating to company XXX). Feel free to style this however you see fit (rounded buttons don't fit with the rest of the site's square buttons, for example. You've already shared some good ideas on how to design horizontal navs whose button count get pretty long.

Also, because this includes the company search functionality, we can remove the 'Mining Company Search' form at the bottom of the page.

Twitter Feed

@Stadl0r how easy is it to build a twitter feed widget (doesn't twitter have easy embed tools for this)?

I don't usually love twitter feeds, but they asked for one. Any thoughts on where this could go?

Add Social Media Share buttons

Post to facebook button and tweet button, added to the article page.

This is pretty low priority. @Stadl0r If you have any thoughts on where in the page it belongs, take a stab at it. Otherwise, I can get to it later (don't know how to do it off the top of my head, but will look at the developer docs).

shrink vertical spacing

Still hearing from Carter Center that they think vertical spacing is too generous on the site. I've removed some of the section content that is no longer relevant, and some of the lorem ipsum. Probably makes sense to shave down padding/margins as well.

I'm going to start seeing if some content can't better be placed in tabs. Open to any suggestions here.

share and export icons

Can you create new versions of the export and share icons that are either .svg or transparent backgrounds or combined into a sprite file. Would also be useful to have them in light/dark versions.

This will enable us to use them against different backgrounds.

document page changes

  • move 'download pdf' under author
  • add categories title above categories
  • list categories on one line

Move Carter Center Logo to Header

Site admins have been told that it's not clear enough that they are a Carter Center project. Suggested moving the carter center logo into the header, if it can somehow share space with the CongoMines logo.

Because they are also trying to shrink the header ( #8 ), this might require rethinking header layout some.

The carter center logo could, but doesn't have to go in the sticky nav. Maybe better not to include it.
