cognition's Issues

Asynchronous version for Spring 2022

I am teaching an asynchronous online version of this course for Spring 2022. The plan is to adapt the existing resources to the asynchronous format.

New additions will include a learning module tab. The course will be divided into 12 week long learning modules, each covering a different topic/chapter in cognition. The learning modules will provide a guide to students about how to engage with material each week. Generally, a learning module will include three sections: READ, WATCH/LISTEN, and ENGAGE. The reading will include a textbook chapter, WATCH will include a mini-lecture, and ENGAGE will point students to a quiz on blackboard, or other assignment.

  • Create a new learning module tab on course website

  • Link new learning modules on yml and syllabus

  • Getting started learning module

    • Write .Rmd
    • Add to blackboard
    • record and add mini-lecture
    • finalize, make available
  • Learning module 1: What is Cognition?

    • edit slide decks
    • make QALMRI slide decks
    • double check .rmd
    • add to blackboard
    • Record minilecture 1
    • Record QALMRI minilecture
    • Finalize
  • #5

  • Learning module 3: Eugenics, Psychology and Intelligence testing

  • Learning module 4: Associations

  • Learning module 5: Behaviorism

  • Learning module 6: Information Processing

  • 7: Memory I

  • 8: Memory II

  • 9: Implicit Cognition

  • 10: Attention and Working Memory

  • 11: Language and Semantic cognition

  • 12: Judgment and Decision-making

Convert to Quarto Project

Quarto appears to be much better suited to developing a course website that contains various assets, like a textbook and slide decks.

Currently in progress of moving everything to quarto. Hopefully this won't break too many links.

social media cards with pkgdown

As of 5/16/22 it is possible to add sitewide social media cards and specific cards for vignettes.

Follow these steps to add the sitewide documentation

https://pkgdown.r-lib.org/articles/metadata.html?q=card#site-wide-customization

BUT,

Images for individual vignettes need to be specified with a complete URL...pkgdown appears to render the URL for the image when it is defined in the _pkgdown.yml file, but not when it is defined in a vignette.

TO DO:

  • Make a logo that fits nicely on pkgdown website, and inside "summary" size twitter card
  • Make the logo be the default sitewide image
  • Figure out how to make a unique image for the front page...might have to use .Rmd for this

add general assignments

I created a few general assignments for my students that are not entered into any specific learning module.

Need to create a new page to house general assignments

Chapter 7: Youtube example is not resolved?

I hope this is the right platform to discuss this issue. First off, I think this textbook is extremely well made and I really appreciate your effort to make this resource publicly available! Your textbook is very inspiring for preparing my own lectures on the topic.

The introduction of chapter 7 (Behaviorism) uses the example of YouTube's recommendation algorithm. The introductory section then closes with the statement:

At the close of this chapter, we will return to the YouTube example to examine their algorithm as a modern case of implementing behavioral principles at massive scale.

That sounds tremendously exciting! However, I could not find this analysis of YouTube's algorithm at the end of the chapter, or anywhere else. Is this content missing?

Chapter on Perception or Emotion

Will the book include a chapter on perception and emotion? Among the main topics usually included in books on cognitive psychology, I think Perception is the only missing.

too many typos

I know...

At first I blamed myself. Probably too much.

Although I knew I was responsible, I learned that my keyboard was also faulty. So, it was mostly me, and partly my keyboard.

Learning module 2: Mental Imagery

  • Review existing chapter and slides
  • Record mini-lecture
  • Do mini-lecture on Marks (1973)
  • add to quiz questions based on Marks (1973)
  • write learning module page add to website
  • add to blackboard
  • Create non-quiz assignment

Experimental lab platform

This issue is for discussing how to develop and grow an online experimental lab platform for this OER course and textbook.
