Hacktoberfest logo

Hello all you beautiful nerds and welcome to another year of Hacktoberfest! at the Hacktoberfest Swag List

As the official website states, Hacktoberfest is a time for everyone to celebrate open-source and come together to make meaningful contributions towards software and organizations you love. Whether this is your first Hacktoberfest or your 9th, everyone can contribute to making open-source software even better!

Low-code or no-code contributions are encouraged, so everyone has a chance, regardless of skill level, to contribute and make open-source projects even better!

Please take a look at the new Contributing.md file as the way to add organizations to the list has changed.

What is the Hacktoberfest Swag List?

The Hacktoberfest Swag List site and GitHub repo are here to showcase all of the amazing companies that go above and beyond by offering their own swag for the holiday. The goal of this project is to connect contributors to open-source projects that they might not have heard about before and drive traffic towards organizations that celebrate Hacktoberfest and can use a little more help.

This website/repo is not about collecting all of the swag you can. It is about the open-source community and highlighting organizations that purposely want to drive traffic to their projects during Hacktoberfest by offering unique swag.

Swag is an added benefit of helping out these awesome organizations, not the reason for you to contribute in the first place!

Participating in Hacktoberfest requires following the official values, including not spamming the participating companies.

Disclaimer: This website is a fan and community made creation. It is not affiliated with Hacktoberfest or any company offering swag.

Rearrange The Hacktoberfest Swag List?

Now that this list of companies giving out swag for Hacktoberfest has grown quite long, does anyone have any thoughts on how it should be styled or rearranged? I kind of like the idea of putting DigitalOcean/GitHub/Twillio at the top, then Microsoft, then everyone else in alphabetical order.

Or, would you rather see it organized from least amount of work to most? Or best swag to worse swag?

Let me know your thoughts, and feel free to submit a PR if you figure out a decent way to organize the list. πŸ‘

Gather Companies Offering Swag for Hacktoberfest 2019

Hello all!

With Hacktoberfest 2019 right around the corner, is anyone yet aware of companies committed to offering swag?

You can review the 2018 branch here to see the list of companies that participated last year. I've heard back from only one of them with a commitment to sponsor swag again this year.

If you hear of a swag opportunity on the horizon for 2019, let us know by posting here.

However, don't submit a Pull Request or a new Issue yet until Hacktoberfest begins and you've signed up on the DigitalOcean website
You can submit your PRs now if you wish to add companies to the list before Hacktoberfest officially begins, but keep in mind that any PRs you make before you register for Hacktoberfest (or before Oct 1st) won't count toward the official Hacktoberfest swag.

I just want to gather things in one place until Hacktoberfest 2019 begins.

Once the most festive of holidays does start, then please submit your PRs and Issues to add companies to the list, and be sure to read the Contributing guidelines! I want as many people to get their swag as possible!

Hacktoberfest 2023 Swag Blocklist

Sadly, not every company that participates in Hacktoberfest sees the value in being on this Swag List. While this project sends many, many meaningful contributions to amazing open source projects big and small, it will also inevitably lead to some spammy PRs from people just looking for stickers and a shirt. Most companies and maintainers totally understand that; it simply comes with the territory of Hacktoberfest.

Other companies don't see it that way. While I fundamentally disagree with their positions, I don't want to get into any more Twitter battles over this. These are the companies who have asked to remain off of the Hacktoberfest Swag List:

  • Umbraco (Please see Issue #156)

Any PRs that add a company on the list above will be closed. If you have questions regarding their stance on Hacktoberfest or this project, please ask the companies directly and feel free to have them reach me on Twitter for further discussions.

At the end of the day, you decide how you want to help those in the open source community. ❀️

Change Octocat Background to Purple

This is a great first issue for those new to Hacktoberfest and coding in general!

This swag list is a Jekyll site that uses a basic HTML template to build its pages. Part of that template is putting the little Octocat logo in the top-right corner so people browsing the website can very easily jump to the GitHub repo.

I am looking for someone to change the hex color value for the background of the Octocat from orange to purple to match the official color scheme of this year's Hacktoberfest theme.

You can find that file here: https://github.com/crweiner/hacktoberfest-swag-list/blob/master/_layouts/default.html

Please find where the Octocat portion of the template is and change the background color to something purple.

Once you have done that, submit a PR and view the preview that is generated automatically by Netlify to make sure it looks the way you want.

Thanks!

Fix flags in markdownlint and Code Climate

I recently added a CI bot to check for Markdown styling/formatting issues, being that this swag list is just a giant Markdown document. Code Climate is using a Ruby program called markdownlint to verify that the Markdown is correctly formatted in a document.

Read more about that Ruby script here: https://github.com/markdownlint/markdownlint

As you can publically see here, Code Climate/markdownlint have identified many places for improvement in this list's Markdown formatting.

Is anyone willing to tackle these issues to make this Hacktoberfest list better?

These are helpful links to understand what is going on with this Ruby script:
https://docs.codeclimate.com/docs/markdownlint
https://github.com/markdownlint/markdownlint/blob/v0.4.0/docs/RULES.md

I am not interested in fixing the following:

  • Line length errors: GitHub renders them just fine
  • Multiple headers with the same content: needed due to how the list is formatted with different PR requirements and difficulties

If you want to be a true superhero, you can also add a native .mdlrc file to skip those rules from flagging in the first place.

Thank you for your help and contributions in the spirit of Hacktoberfest!

The version of kramdown in the Gemsfile needs to be updated to version 2.3.0 or later. However, there is a dependency getting in the way that requires the older version of kramdown.

Hello all!

I wanted to see the community's thoughts regarding adding Gatsby to the list. They give out free swag to all of their contributors all the time, not just during Hacktoberfest, yet they do have a blog post talking about Hacktoberfest this year.

Would you want companies like this to be added to the Hacktoberfest Swag List, or just stick to those companies that specifically celebrate Hacktoberfest?

Add link to issues that are tagged with hacktoberfest.

When looking for issues in an organization that has multiple project I open up github search to filter issues tagged with hacktoberfest. Would this project be open to adding a link for this for all the projects? Below is an example of how I would want to change this for all the projects where this is possible:

Before:

#### [**Accord Project**]

- **Swag**: T-shirt, stickers

After:

#### [**Accord Project**](https://github.com/search?l=&p=4&q=user%3Aaccordproject+label%3Ahacktoberfest&state=open&type=Issues)

- **Swag**: T-shirt, stickers
