After subscribing to the mailing list and finding a similar problem there with the suggestion of using the eng_cryptodev.c presented here, I recompiled openssl with it and it worked! I can now make self-signed certificates on the cryptodev equipped device.
I am going to add the patch to my site and strongly urge others to apply it as well.
Thanks to the cryptodev devs, retired and current. My ARMv5te needs all the help it can get.

Hello Mike,
Maybe it is better to report the issue and suggest to openssl folks to
include the patch. I think I've sent it quite some time ago but it seems it
was lost somehow.
