Okay so the critical trigger is that you keep repeating the same expression that has already failed with a semantic error.
The reason is probably that after a semantic error the program is left in an inconsistent state. In compiled mode a semantic error means aborting the program. So there was no reason to keep a sane state.
I suppose we'll have to figure out what to do with the REPL if this happens. It won't be feasible to fix this easily all around.
