cultureoffset.github.com's Issues

Why is this on Github?

Leaving the debate over Github's alleged wrongs aside for now, the mixed messages of this protest project are just too hard to ignore:

One of the implied problems that this project is attempting to combat is that Github has become too powerful in the tech community, and that the tech community is beholden to them and their wrongful practices.

So it's a little more than "irony" that you're hosting a Github-protest site on Github:

  1. You're forcing all supporters, even those who don't currently use Github, to now become Github users and thus inflate Github's userbase numbers, which are used as a metric of success.
  2. You are literally giving Github's overseers direct access to your supporters and their data associated with the service.
  3. Git itself was created to break away from proprietary and monolithic development models. By saying, "Well, we have to host our site on Github because there's little other choice" perpetuates a harmful overestimation of Github's power, which does nothing to help your cause.
  4. Why does a pledge site need to have a public git repo, or any version control, to receive user pledges in the first place?

There are so many ways to conduct a protest with cutting-edge tech, and there are undoubtedly many allies in the tech community who'd be more than willing to help you set up a website that serves your aims, and perhaps with less work than using Github.

Hosting it on Github is not just "irony", it's a slap in the face of all the work done to keep the Web free and decentralized, and basically acts as free advertisement to your purported adversary: "Github, the Web Site Hosting Solution so Powerful and All-Encompassing that Even Its Sworn Enemies Have to Use It"

Domain is 400 Forbidden

hey culture offset - I was looking at both the domain (CNAME) and cultureoffset.github.com, and in case you weren't aware, it's a forbidden page. If the domain is expired, does it make sense to remove the CNAME (or is it a larger server issue?)
