falster_lab_webpage's Introduction

Source for Falster lab website

The website is developed using the Hugo static site generator and deployed on netifly.

The site layout was adapted from Carl Boettiger's lab notebook, the theme of which he's also made available as hugo-material theme. As noted there, this theme is an adaptation for Hugo of the Bootstrap-based Material Design by Creativetim, which itself builds off Bootstrap v4 and Google's Material Design kit. Thanks to Carl, Creativetim, Bootstrap and Google for contributing the open source materials that made this site possible.

Building site

Following are my notes on site upkeep.

Download & install Hugo from https://github.com/gohugoio/hugo/releases. NB, you don't need Go to run Hugo.

To build site run

hugo

To view, run following, which will open a viewer on localhost:1313/

hugo server -D

Short codes

Hugo uses short codes to easily embed content. See https://gohugo.io/content-management/shortcodes/

{{< figure src="https://danielfalster.com/images/2016.06.27-useR/useR-600x300.png" height="100" width="100" >}}

I wrote the following additional shortcodes for use in the site:

{{< iframe "https:...." "960" "540" >}}
{{< nicequote "quote" "author" "source" >}}

falster_lab_webpage's Issues

Cornsters & friends lab meetings

I would like to have a page documenting our regular lab discussions with Will Conrwell's lab, to show what types of things we do.

Activities are being documented in a google sheet so need to embed this.

Update lab members (09/20)

  • Add Fonti Kar (starting 2020) -- Quantitative modeling and software development
  • Add Gary Truong "Project officer"
  • Add Theresa O'Brien - MSc student (starting 2020): "Tropical tree life histories"
  • Add Rebecca Stolper - MPhil student (starting 2020): "Tree growth & mortality"
  • Cailtlin Baxter -> move to alumni
  • Saras Windecker -> move to bottom, she's now based at Uni Melbourne, collaborating post-doc. "Trait-based species distributions"

Transfer hosting to Netlify

Ok, setting up new webpage with netlify

Page is live at https://danielfalster.netlify.com, builds directly from this repo (https://github.com/dfalster/falster_lab_webpage.git)

Now trying to redirect domain danielfalster.com to this site

  • redirect old website from http://dfalster.github.io to new site see here
  • added custom domain to netlify see here
  • added alias and nameserevers to domain host (namecheap) as instructed by netlify here
  • Check back in 24hrs to see if it works!
