digital-preservation-is-people.github.io's Issues

Create a guide to contributing GitHub content

For folks coming into GitHub new and are writing articles they may need a good getting started guide. There may be a lot of flexibility around the ways to contribute this way - including drafting articles as issues, but we should have a think and write something up / demo something via screen cast.

Write an article about how to get started contracting?

"One does not simply accept funding without understanding how to report this in your year end taxes"

There are definitely contracts out there, and good people missing out on them. Trying to manage a full-time job while also trying to transition to contracts is also really difficult. Also, there are open source developers doing a lot for free and its simply not a trivial task to accept money for these things...

Reflect on the highlights of 2018

Hi all,
I'm drafting up a blog about the year in Digital Preservation is People, (the pull request is here: #14), and since this is a community blog, it would be great if you have time to take a look & edit/contribute as you see fit.

We're especially looking for ideas of good things/incremental changes that happened last year. As an example, so far we have ipres2018 enacting a CoC, the DPC drafting an inclusion & diversity panel, & DLF calling for no more manels.

Thank you!

Post idea: #52fund

I wonder if we should amplify what is going on with the SAA nominations and the #52fund. For those who aren't clued in, a petition signed by 52 SAA members (signed by some former SAA presidents, fellows, etc, If you also look at the signers of the petition, you'll see some digipres names in there too. ) overrode the the SAA nominating committee (an elected committee) by adding another VP nominee to the election slate, and it looks a lot like gate-keeping when you read more into it. There's more information in this tweet thread: https://twitter.com/gonzoarchivist/status/1217592802898522112 and there are great blogposts by Ruth Kitchin Tillman: https://ruthtillman.com/post/disappointed-society-of-american-archivists/ and one of the original nominees for VP, Courtney Chartier, https://toxicarchivist.wordpress.com/2020/01/16/white-like-me/

In response, Samantha Winn is organizing a fundraiser (#52fund) to support QTBIPOC folks joining SAA and/or attending the SAA annual meeting this year.https://docs.google.com/document/d/1bW7OMGahktEltnfKuSz7TppusPcl9Nw3iDRpwd9fh9Y/edit#

Wondering if anyone here has the bandwidth, or is involved with the SAA (I'm not a member) and wants to write something up.

OPF spreadsheet working group

Haven't a more useful place to record this other than it sitting as an email reminder in my inbox:

The reaction to the OPF spreadsheet working group was interesting: https://twitter.com/bitsgalore/status/1438522410555240454/ I wonder what a more constructive response would look like from the community or indeed, what the feeling was from those whose hard work went into this effort. Such a quick response on Twitter from community leaders could potentially be damaging. Can anything be done to improve this?
