search's Issues

Searching with DuckDuckGo yields no results on Opera

Reported by user:

"I have your extension Disconnect Search on my Opera 20 browser. I also have Disconnect on it. I find strange that when I do a Disconnect search with Duckduckgo, it never finds anything. Even if I search for something innocuous like "vegetables" or "man" I get a response, did not come up with any documents. If I do a normal search with Duckduckgo, I find a lot."

Google Maps POI search breaks if "Search engine websites" is checked

With the option enabled, go to maps.google.com, search for a type of business (I tried to search for a lunchroom).
Now the expected result would be a screen filled with click-able POI markers detailing all the places that would sell me lunch.

Instead the search never completes and no markers are shown.

I know G.Maps is an unprotected tool, so shouldn't it be white-listed from the 'Search engine' list or something?

Search Everywhere not working with igHome

Reported via email:

"I selected "search from the omnibus" then restarted Firefox, signed back in to igHome (my home page), put a search parameter into the main search box for "roadside memorial" – and this is what I get. A blank page."

overlap of search field and buttons on android

When searching on search.disconnect.me on an android phone through the browser, the search field and the buttons 'images', 'web' ... overlap. Will upload picture later today.

Is the android app going to be open sourced any time soon?

Hijacks my REAL VPN!

This is a narrower specialized VPN that has added benefits for me to run my searches in particular through.

To disable my browser-wide proxy settings and force me to choose between search vpn and browser vpn gives me a nobrainer choice.

Talking out of my ass here, somewhat, but IIRC u need to look into the declarativeWebRequest API on chrome.

Otherwise, keep up the great work.

Interferes with Visit Page button

View page button not working for image search

"After doing a Google image search I usually right click an image and "open in new tab". Once there if I like what I see the "view page" button should work, it doesn't."

Please add highlight of searched keywords in snippets

Most search engines highlight the keywords you searched for in the snippets listed in the result page, for example by presenting them in bold letters. This is really useful, please add such a feature for Disconnect search, too.

search image not working

test on ubuntu precise chromium
Version 30.0.1599.114 Ubuntu 12.04 (30.0.1599.114-0ubuntu0.12.04.3)

when click on image search on bing result, from disconnect search from omnibox,
it get back to search result and do not show image result.

Gmail hanging for 10+ seconds in Chrome

"Just wanted to let you know that while testing Disconnect Search for Chrome (Version 30.0.1599.69; OS X 10.8.5), every time I tried viewing gmail.com the browser would hang and become unusable for a short time. I've since disabled the extension and the problem has gone away. It hangs for about 10+ seconds. In case it helps, I'm also running the Disconnect and Ad Block Plus extensions."

Breaks Duckduckgo !bang syntax

When installing the search on Firefox (with duckduckgo as standard search) and trying to use the "bang syntax" [https://search.disconnect.me/browse/https://duckduckgo.com/bang.html] I get re-redirected to back to duckduckgo.

example searching for

!g space

in Duckduckgo should send me to google but breaks that functionality and redriects me back to ddg.

Image searches redirecting to Disconnect page

Reported by user:

"often times when clicking on a search result (particularly "Images"), i get directed to the "get Disconnect" page and not the search result. Even as I've already installed Disconnect Search and even when I use Disconnect Search, I get directed to your "get Disconnect" page.

I'm on Mac OS X 10.9 (Mavericks) and using Firefox v26 and Chrome v31.0.1650.63"

Power Point and PDF pages don't open correctly

Reported by user:

"I really like Disconnect. So that you can check on some strange behavior, I wanted to let you know that in the last couple of days, I've been having some problems with the page browse functionality. Today, I searched on Google for "least squares estimation derivatives equal to zero," and tried to download a PowerPoint file and a .pdf from two of the sites that came up in the results.

This is the URL of the page in my browser for the results page:
https://search.disconnect.me/browse/https://www.google.com/search?q=least+squares+estimation+derivatives+equal+to+zero&gbv=1&sei=hYDFUoXyI9WvsQTK6ICYDg

When I tried to open the .ppt with Office 2013, it was not possible to open it ("PowerPoint can't open this type of file...", and when I opened the pdf, it was just a series of blank pages. I have attached this file, in case you would like to validate.

The PowerPoint was from

www.cs.princeton.edu/courses/.../cos323_s06_lecture07_lsq.ppt

The .pdf was from

www.seas.ucla.edu/~vandenbe/103/lectures/ls.pdf

It would be great to have the option to turn on/off the page browse functionality, without disabling the add-on completely. This is the first time I have noticed the page browse, based on the URL.

I am using Firefox 26 in Windows 7, and have both Disconnect 3.11.0 and Disconnect Search 1.4.0."

Country: Belgium French

Please add Belgium French as a country choice, now it's be-nl.

Annoying for all results provided, using FR, CA, CH... is not a solution neither ;-)

Prompting users for a password to proxy servers

The last few days I noticed - while accessing the intranet at work - that firefox promts me for my (windows) login data for our company proxy server (which has been set to auto detect in firefox). This only happens

  1. the first time I start Firefox
  2. and sometimes randomly on some websites

This doesn't happen when

  1. the plugin is deactivated.

So is definitely caused by the Disconnect 3.5.0 plugin (I deactivated all plugins one by one to find the one causing it).

The promt window has to be closed, and it reopens 3 times (displaying a total of 4 times). This happens every time I start firefox.

I contacted our network administrator and he said that it is probably caused by the plugin, because it doesn't recognize to windows login data. I have no clue if that is legitimate. When I close the login promts, I can continue to browse the internet. There is no functionalty loss caused by the plugin, it is just annoying as hell.

Chrome 403 error

Copied from user email:

I'll often get "403 - forbidden" pages when using this addon. Specifically, I get them when I use the middle mouse button to click on the links (to avoid having to right click then go to "open in a new tab")

A few reloads (2 or 3) seem to load the page past the Forbidden screen, but it's annoying. Also, opening the links with left click (opening the website in the same page), right click > open in new tab / open in new window / open in incognito window all work.

Clicking a link with the middle mouse button and then "right click > open in new tab" on the same link returns a 403 for the first, but the second loads.

Clicking a link with the "right click > open in new tab" and then a middle click on the same link loads the page in both cases.

The error message is

"Forbidden

You don't have permission to access [url] on this server."

I was not able to reproduce this issue with the firefox version of this addon, and the fact that only middle mouse clicks trigger it lead me to believe that this issue is directly due to the proxy used by disconnect search and that it is specific to the chrome version."

Breaks image.google.com

I am unable to access image.google.com when the plugin is activated (Firefox), instead I am redirected to normal (google) search.

Firefox not working at all after installing Search

"I installed disconnect search on Mozzila and now I am unable to open the browser.
When I attempt to open it indicates connecting however it never connects.
I want to disable and have looked at your instructions, however since Mozzila will
not open I can not get to Tools."

Conflicts with Canvas

Reported by user:

"I was trying to email my class in Canvas. In order to do this, the Canvas Inbox requires you to push a little box in the "To:" field. This seems to run a little script that brings up a drop down menu, which is supposed to contain various classes you can email. When Disconnect Search is running, that drop down box is either empty or it fails to appear. When I encountered the problem and the Canvas help staff could not replicate it in Chrome, I began testing the extensions and found that Disconnect Search was the culprit. I have to imagine that Disconnect Search is thinking that the Inbox "To:" field is a search box and so is intercepting the javascript or something."

When searching private browsing, search pops up in non-private window

Reported via email:

"Whenever you are searching in private browsing, it always opens up the search in a non-private browsing window. Until this error is fixed, I am going to have to keep this add-on disabled."

"Another thing: After disabling the "Disconnect Search" add-on and then re-enabling it, the add-on stays does not come back."

Middle button click doesn't open new tab

I'm running Chrome 34 on Windows 7. Before installed disconnect.me plugin when I middle click on a link, it opens the link in a new tab. Now, when I middle click a link from a search page that disconnect.me uses, it opens the link in the same tab. If I right click the link and select open in new tab, that works.

cmd-click issue on firefox 40.0.3, Yosemite 10.10.5

cmd-click opens in new tab but in the last (far right) position and under the other tabs. Would like to see return of behavior where tab opens next to disconnect tab and on top. In settings, I have it set to switch to new tabs immediately, and it works everywhere except with disconnect.me -- Using ctrl-click and choosing open in new tab produces the desired behavior, but it is an extra step I used to not have to take. Thank you!

# symbol not picked up in searches

Reported by user:

"I regularly search for entries with the # symbol. Unfortunately Disconnect interprets this incorrect and cuts off the search string before it regardless of the search.
So the search for "Test C# Test" will actually search as "Test C"

Hidden search terms in url

Hi,

first of all, i hope this is the right place to mention this. For me it simply was the easiest way to reach you. Feel free to point me somewhere else if necessary.

After the latest update you remade the whole search i guess. I use it mainly with google and besides the new look (less like google, more stripped down) you introduced a feature that hides the search terms in the address bar. The consequence from this is that when you keep your browser tab open, the session expires at one point and your search is lost. Before you could search something, leave the tab open as long as necessary and it would stay that way.

Would be great if you could reintroduce that feature.

Greetings

strict safesearch

is it possible i keep using google/bing/etc but disconnect automatically set it for strict safesearch?

What about local search ?

Great job, i love this ! I've shared this to a friend, but she told me a little trouble : it's not localised.

Searchs in google.com and google.fr are completly different, so, the possibility to choose the ttl / or directly the domaine name in a config menu would be very usefull.

Do you think it's possible ?

Prevents logging into gmail with Firefox

On two different Mac OS X machines, one with Yosemite and another one with Mountain Lion, if the addon is installed on Firefox 38.0.1 I cannot log into gmail. When entering the password the the page refreshes on the password form without any error messages. When deactivating the addon I could log in normally.

Bad translation

I don't know exactly where to say this. The Spanish translation of Search Tools should be Herramientas de búsqueda instead of Ferramentas de pesquisa which is in Portuguese.
