explanation is a bit technical, but let me try: mu stores string as lowercase, with accents removed, for easier searching; if that does not work the fast way, mu falls back to simply utf8-lowercasing the text. because we want to avoid copying strings (for speed), internally, the lowercase version of the string should be at most as long as the original. I couldn't think of any cases where this would happen (ie. the lowercase version of a character takes more bytes than the uppercase version in utf8), but apparently, you found one. in this case, mu simply discards the superfluous bytes.
