Given the EOL of APU and firmware updates, do you happen to have any recommendations for alternative platforms?

for at least Debian there is no hassle with running TinyCore Linux to flush your firmware.

Just install the apt-package for flashrom directly from Debian

    apt install flashrom

get your required firmware e.g.

    wget https://3mdeb.com/open-source-firmware/pcengines/apu2/apu2_v4.11.0.1.rom

and flash directly from within Debian e.g.

    flashrom -w apu2_v4.11.0.1.rom -p internal

for the new firmware to come into effect it is important to shut down and power off (i.e. disconnect power)
