branding's Issues

General branding direction

Oragono had a very oldskool IRC feeling, in terms of its logo, the site design, all that sort of thing. e.g.:

For now, we're going to reuse the existing Oragono site/etc and just change the names around, but in this issue I'll be working on the branding for Ergo.Chat and the Ergo IRC Server going forward.

Ergo gives me more of a modern feeling. We don't want a soulless default-bootstrap site and look and feel, but at least a bit more modern than the old Ora site which intentionally went for that oldskool feel.

Here's some references of logos/wordmarks from other IRC software and groups:

I've always loved this little ircd-hybrid logo - and hexagons are something that seeeems to pop up around IRC a fair bit?

Likewise, the Anope logo has always been pretty iconic to me at least.

And here's the gorgeous InspIRCd logo:

Seriously, InspIRCd's logo is just *mwah*, I love it. But there's a lot of cool elements from elsewhere on here too, and looking outside just IRC projects at other branding and maybe at other media as well would be cool.

I still love how the original Ora logo turns out on screen, and it's always really cool seeing it pop by on my terminal when I'm connecting. Lots of character in that one. Gotta try to imbue the new branding with an interesting, unique character as well (the fact that so many people were attached to the Ora name and all is prolly a sign that I got some stuff right there with the whole package, as spartan as it was - try to extract lessons from there and keep those in mind as I move forward).

We've never used colours really in our designs. Always white-on-black, maybe a touch of blue. With Ergo I want to hack on some ideas and toss some proposals in this issue, so I'm going to be doing that.

Right now I'm not sure where I want the design and branding of Ergo to end up, but I'll post in here once I have more to share. If anyone has suggestions or proposals, feel free to throw them in this issue as well and I'll consider them!
