globalThis

An ECMAScript spec-compliant polyfill/shim for globalThis. Invoke its "shim" method to shim globalThis if it is unavailable.

This package implements the es-shim API interface. It works in an ES3-supported environment and complies with the spec proposal.

Most common usage:

var globalThis = require('globalthis')(); // returns native globalThis if compliant
	/* or */
var globalThis = require('globalthis/polyfill')(); // returns native globalThis if compliant

Implementation question

Hey, great repo, and thanks a million for championing this proposal. I have written environment checks so many times and am thrilled I'll be able to stop doing it in the future!

With that being said, I think the implementation takes the wrong approach by searching for browser globals first. These globals are easily mocked (and often are) in Node.

Checking for Node first is a better approach, imo, because it can't as easily be faked. I always use:

typeof process === 'object' && {}.toString.call(process) === '[object process]'

This approach can't easily (at all?) be mocked so you should always get the correct global.

Happy to submit a pull request but wanted to run it by you first. Thanks again for your hard work!

Slightly more horrifying, but more universal technique

A horrifying globalThis polyfill in universal JavaScript describes a technique that could be useful for this project.

Instead of the current approach of detecting known environment-specific references to the global this, the new technique doesn't depend on any such bindings, and is 100% universal JavaScript (although you would still need a single fallback if IE <= 10 support is a concern).

How add to Angular Universal project running in node 10 Firebase function?

I tried the implementation in the documentation in my polyfill.ts but I'm still getting the error: globalThis is not defined. The polyfill.ts file didn't like using the require keyword so I implemented it like the other Angular polyfills: import 'globalthis/polyfill';

Is there a separate implementation for Angular 11 apps running in node 10?
