Reading a folder full of chunked CSV or Parquet files is quite usual.
The files to read can be specified by using a glob pattern like /prefix*suffix.ext
Examples:
Currently, the file path must be set in a text box before the user clicks open.
A faster workflow would allow users to drag and drop a file to open it.
There are some examples here of how to do it:
Excel is often used for tabular data storage.
Polars doesn't have native support to read it, but we can use calamine to do the reading and parsing.
This will allow reading:
Example:

Polars has support under avro

Sorting by column values would make the viewer more useful.
This can be implemented by letting the user click on the header cells.
It would be helpful if it were configurable whether this sorts the whole dataset, or just the data that has been read by the app.
Starting off with sorting just what has been read into memory should be OK.
This is supported by Polars with extensions:
https://pola-rs.github.io/polars/user-guide/io/database/
Would need to add a text area where the user can write SQL queries.
This should be tested with at least Postgres, SQLite and DuckDB.
When running on Windows 10:
thread 'main' panicked at ...\eframe-0.23.0\src\native\run.rs:756:43:
An OpenGL error occurred: egui_glow requires opengl 2.0+.
note: run with `RUST_BACKTRACE=1` environment variable to display a backtrace
error: process didn't exit successfully: `target\debug\table_view.exe` (exit code: 101)
Might have to change the back-end to something that works more seamlessly across platforms, like wgpu as suggested here:
emilk/egui#3165
The table widget doesn't currently support horizontal scrolling.
Possible solutions:
Some formats such as Parquet have a schema that describes the data.
It should be possible for users to inspect the schema using the viewer.
This goes beyond only displaying column types in the headers.
Users should be able to see and select N most recently opened file paths.
N = 10 would be a good start.
If the file path entry doesn't lead to a good file path (perhaps file was moved), it should be removed from the history.
Being able to plot data would make it easier for users to interpret and analyze data.
Only very basic plotting features should be supported (at least initially).
