Figurate

The general idea of Figurate is to create an extensible and open platform for building a knowledge base. Typically organisations use multiple tools to manage documents, specifications, configurations, etc., which leads to a confusing and disconnected approach to environment management.

Some key concepts/elements:

  • OSGi - plugin/extension support for adding data sources and outputs
  • Camel - routing of data into, out of, and around the platform
  • JCR - use a hierarchical repository to store data, documents and other environment artifacts

Some interesting things to explore:

  • How relevant is swarm behaviour? Do many simple plugins lead to emergent behaviour/characteristics?

Create RSS plugin

Create an RSS plugin that supports ingesting RSS feeds.

This is useful for monitoring builds/updates specific to a project.

Provide inline chat for topics

Similar to comment systems, inline chat provides a record of more immediate conversations about a specific topic. Could also integrate with other XMPP clients via a unique topic user (e.g. [email protected]).

Provide admin/status dashboard

A key component is visualisation of loaded/started modules and services. A periodic table view can effectively show the different modules and their state.

Support topic creation

A topic is a way to collate communications, documents and artifacts pertaining to a specific workflow (e.g. visa application, trip to france, etc.).

Analogous to issue, ticket, etc. in issue management systems.

Provide bi-directional email for topics

In addition to email alerts for topic changes, users should be able to email a topic in a similar way to mailing lists. (i.e. the topic email is essentially a mailing list for the topic)
