com.discordapp.discord's Introduction

Discord

Discord is a free all-in-one messaging, voice and video client that's available on your computer and phone.

This repo hosts the flatpak wrapper for Discord, available at Flathub.

flatpak install flathub com.discordapp.Discord
flatpak run com.discordapp.Discord

Differences in flatpak version

The flatpak version runs in a sandbox to provide better safety and privacy for users.

However, this sandboxing prevents the following features from working:

  • Game Activity: This flatpak version of Discord cannot scan running processes to detect running games.
There is currently no workaround or solution for this limitation.
  • Unrestricted File Access: Default sandbox permissions for this package limit Discord to only certain directories, so you can't access your entire Home directory. Currently, this limits which file directories you can attach files from and impacts drag and drop functionality.
This limitation will likely be overcomed eventually, when Electron give us a file picker portal which will allow full access to the filesystem while still restricting unauthorized access.
To work around this now, you can change sandbox permissions of installed flatpak applications (for example, with Flatseal or with flatpak override --filesystem=home com.discordapp.Discord) to give Discord broader file system access, allowing file attachments from more locations.
  • Rich Presence: See this page if you want to expose Discord's rich presence interface for other applications.

Wayland

This package enables the flags to run on Wayland, however it is opt-in. To opt-in run:

flatpak override --user --socket=wayland com.discordapp.Discord

To opt-out do the same with --nosocket=wayland.

Legal

The Discord app itself is proprietary (closed source).

com.discordapp.discord's Issues

Video Chat

Discord has video chat functionality, but I think it is blocked by the sandbox. the Viber flatpak has
"finish-args" [...
"--device=all",
...]

maybe this is needed here as well?

Installing Discord flatpak in Whonix

I get the an error when I try to install the Discord flatpak within Whonix workstation (Debian).

$ flatpak install /home/user/Downloads/com.discordapp.Discord.flatpakref Installing: com.discordapp.Discord/i386/stable Warning: Can't find dependencies: No entry for app/com.discordapp.Discord/i386/stable in remote summary flatpak cache Installing: com.discordapp.Discord/i386/stable from flathub error: No such branch 'app/com.discordapp.Discord/i386/stable' in repository summary

Any had any luck?

Installation error "The specified session has been invalidated for some reason"

Hi, I'm trying to install this flatpak on a fully patched Slackware 14.2 system. During the downloading step for "discord-0.0.9.tar.gz", it fails with the following error
error: Failed to install com.discordapp.Discord/x86_64/stable: While downloading https://dl.discordapp.net/apps/linux/0.0.9/discord-0.0.9.tar.gz: Error writing data to TLS socket: The specified session has been invalidated for some reason.

Here is the full log with the -vv flag

CJK fonts

screenshot from 2018-04-05 20-50-21

I have adobe-source-han-sans-otc-fonts installed, and CJK characters display correctly in Firefox and Chrome.

Fcitx/Mozc fail to enter text into Discord's input boxes

Another one of those issues that I suspect have to deal with the sandbox, but Mozc refuses to send the finished text over to the input box.
screenshot_20180620_211010
Whenever I hit enter to select the current suggestion, it closes the Mozc suggestion widget and (unlike usual) does not enter the finished text into the input box.

Update version

Please, update to new version. Application show when open to update to new version 0.0.2 and does not open while not installed newest version.

Extremely sluggish/slow

The flatpak version of discord is very sluggish for me and it takes more than a second to transition when clicking on buttons. It has become so bad that I had to resort to using the non-flatpak edition.

There doesn't seem to be anything in the log, but I'll post it here anyways:

Cannot share files

With the Discord flatpak I cannot share files. When I try to drag and drop files into the window, the Discord animation shows up that says "drag and drop", but dropping does nothing.

Also, what's worse is that if I try to manually select a file to add from the little "+" button, almost all off my folders in /home are missing. The only folders in my home folder that show are Downloads, Pictures, and Videos. I have to copy any file I want to share into one of those three folders in order for it to show in the file chooser dialog

Provide Canary version

Hi, now as it is possible to have a beta channel on Flatpak, it would be nice to host the Discord Canary version there.

Discord can't detect running games like OpenTTD or games running through Steam

I'm not sure what is preventing this from happening, but Discord can't figure out when a game is running like the regular deb/rpm version can. Is it possible to expose the running process list to this version of Discord in Flatpak, or will I have to install the packaged one to have that feature?

All that is listed in the list of games to add is flatpak-bwrap.

Discord unable to detect running games

Discord does not detect any games when playing, and when attempting to add a game manually in the settings, the only option is "brwrap". This I suspect is due to it running in the flatpak container, is there any way to allow it to view running processes in the system or is this just something that won't be possible?

Discord should have the ability to read the whole filesystem

... because it has drag n drop support for sending files. But currently Discord can only read the pictures and videos folder in the users home.
When trying to send a file from another folder, this ends in an error.

So maybe it should can read the whole filesystem, so that we can drag n drop to send files from everywhere.

AppIndicator icon invisible

0123b62
After this commit the AppIndicator icon (at least on Gnome, using the (K)StatusNotifierItem/AppIndicator Support extension) becomes invisible, can still be interacted with though.
Trying to launch Discord when no window is currently open launches a new instance instead of bringing up the current one, which also spawns another (also invisible) AppIndicator.
I built it reverting just this commit and both these issues did not exist.

Crash on close

Discord behaves rather strange when closing it on my PC (Fedora 27/Gnome) as well as some others I know of (Fedora 27/KDE and ArchLinux/KDE). When I try to close Discord a new window is spawned without content and I have to close both of those windows.

After I did that discord will be closed via segmentation fault. I do assume this is due to missing dependencies. I do come to that conclusion, because I cannot duplicate this behaviour when using the tar.gz version.

I can replicate that problem every time I close discord.

Discord app not show all folders in home

I installed discord app using flatpack with the option --user. When I selected to send files in chat, the file dialog not show all my folders in home folder, only the pictures folder, the videos folder and all my root system.

Is it normal or is a bug in configurations?

Frequent crashes (SEGV) in libappindicator.so.1.0.0

Discord does frequently crash on my system (Fedora 28, Gnome 3.28 Desktop, Flatpak 0.11.7).

Currently I was unable to trigger the bug on purpose or filter out a specific context on which it happens. But it does happen a lot on my system:

For me this looks like a bug relevant for io.atom.electron.BaseApp. I tried for hours to gather more information, but I am not a C/C++ developer. Furthermore I only found out that libappindicator is quite a mess someone really should take over. The bugs did occur without having "application indicator" support active in my desktop, I will run everything with active "application indicator" on my gnome-shell but for now that is fresh — so I don't know if it does affect the bug.

Rich presence

How can we let Discord be notified by some rich prensence-compatible software? I guess it is more than just adding --filesystem=/proc.

No Microphone input possible.

For a few days I'm not able anymore to get my Microphone working in discord flatpak.
I can set it as input in discord, so it will get recognized, but when I speak something in, there is no pulse in the settings and discord itself tells me that it does not hear me.

Other flatpaks like steam work just fine, also native distro packages. Discord was also working a week or 2 ago.

The same is on another PC with build in microphone.

Distros I use are arch Linux and Debian testing

Other than that, audio output works, webcam input also works.

Inability to click on links

I suspect this is another of these pesky issues that arise from Discord not being willing to work in a sandboxed environment, but any links that usually open up in a browser refuse to work.

Discord error when alt + tab

Everytime when i alt + tab from discord to another app and go back to discord it shows me an error message.

I'm using Fedora 29 and flatpak version is 0.0.8

Discord cant find any games

Discord is able to look what you're playing and show this as status message.
This works with the "Native" version, but not with that flatpak version of discord.

in Settings > Games you can add games, but the only thing that discord finds is "bwrap", wich is not a game but part of flatpak.

I think thats because of the sandbox. No idea how to handle this.

Hello
After update to Discord 0.0.5 I get this error on my system:

$flatpak run com.discordapp.Discord/x86_64/stable
/app/extra/discord: error while loading shared libraries: libgtk-x11-2.0.so.0: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory

Problem occurs on a computer running Arch Linux, KDE Plasma 5.12.5, flatpak 0.11.5.
I have another computer also running Arch Linux with Gnome 3.28.1, flatpak 0.11.5 and it runs Discord 0.0.5 from flathub perfectly.

discord tells me about an update and doesnt start

Hi,
Recently, when I start discord, it tells me that theres an update (v0.0.8) , asks me to download either a deb or rpm or, if I select "I'll figure it out" , simply exits.
I dont know what to do, it used to work fine.
Thanks for your help packaging it.
