bookit's Introduction

Rust

What is this?

A CLI tool for keeping track of how your time is spent, specifically in the context of freelancing.

Installation

You can install the CLI tool with cargo by specifying the git flag and referencing this repository.

Roadmap

The first priority is having a great cli experience and relevant data structures. At present all data structures are fairly minimal. In order of priority I would say:

  1. Improved data structures for Contractor and Alias that hold relevant information
  2. Good error handling that does not rely on using panic!
  3. Pretty terminal outputs that can be filtered based on relevant parameters.

This would be a good version v1.0.

Building on top of that I would like to be able to generate invoices in PDF. What I would want is control in granularity of how much data is displayed. I would also want custom templates for different contractors. This would be v2.0.

The final set of functionality that is on the horizon is generating static sites that integrate with something like Vercel. I would like to be able to share protected URLs with clients so they can track my activities whenever they want.

bookit's Issues

Filterable views for hours/alias/contractor

Currently whenever you inspect all items of any of these structures, you get all results.

These results should be sorted and filtered sensibly by default and the user should be able to override the filtering behavior to inspect some subset.

Promptable struct macro

It would be good to be able to do something like

#[promptable]
struct A { val: String }

And generate a constructor where each value is prompted for user input

Split config to 2 commands

Config currently manages Alias and Contractor but this doesn't actually make that much sense. These are separate entities and they should be treated similarly to booking.

Don't panic

Panic statements are a bad practice. The most graceful way of handling errors is use the ? operator. In conjunction with this decent errors should be specified.

Detailed contractor summary

When inspecting a contractor, I want to see a summary of :

  • aliases that hours were booked on
  • list of hour logs under aliases
  • total hours spent on project
  • total money earned

This output should be based on some filters:

  • period (by default all bookings from the current month)
  • granularity (display aliases + hours | just aliases)
