yellowdot's Introduction

Hide the macOS yellow recording dot in the corner of your screen

v2 (after macOS 13)

available here

Hides the recording or location indicator dot by making it full black or white.

Works best in fullscreen situations on MacBooks with a notch where the black dot would sit on a black menubar making it completely invisible.

In other situations it helps by making the dot blend in with the other menubar icons, making it less of a distraction.

v1 (before macOS 12.2)

available here

Inspired by undot by s4y which grabs and moves the dot window outside the screen.

Since macOS 12.2, the dot is no longer a simple window that can be moved away.

Removing the dot completely in 12.2 and later requires altering system files, which I wouldn't want to do.

Tyshawn Cormier came up with a very clever solution for this in his RecordingIndicatorUtility app. Check it out if you still want to hide the dot!

yellowdot's Issues

The dot won't disappear on monterey :(

macOS 12.0.1 on latest 16'' M1 Pro Max Macbook.

Funny side note: When I wanted to make a screenshot as proof, the dot smoothly animated away :D
But I guess that is a macOS thing, isnt it?

And yes: I have allowed "Bedienungshilfen" :(

Wide gamut color space - HDR - Bright dot

There is an issue with the wide color gamut screens. While the app does apply the brightness filter - it should be done with respect to the wide color gamut color profiles.
Setting the brightness = 1.0 for a SDR screen looks ok - the menubar icons have the same color value ~ looks like the same brightness.
Setting the brightness = 1.0 for a SDR screen gives the dot higher than default UI items brightness ~ it's glowing.

I have 4 screens. Two of them are HDR (including internal MacBook one). Two of them are SDR based. It's not easy to show not having the HDR capable screen.

Multi-monitor and hiding the dot

I've got a multi-monitor setup: m1 + 2 external screens.
Upon starting the app, it removes all the dots.
When I tab through apps and get to different screens, it's only hiding the dot on the screen with the active display, which is I believe the default behaviour?

Resetting settings?

First time starting all went fine, and it looked like the app was doing a good job!
So, I hid the menu bar icon, but now I can't open up the GUI any more?

The usual approach of reopening the app while running doesn't open the interface either.
I have to manually killall it to quit.
Removing it with it's produced plist and reinstalling it doesn't reset the settings either?
