JavaScript Objects Diagnostic

Prerequisites

Instructions

  1. Fork and clone this repository.
  2. Change into the new directory.
  3. Create a new branch, named response.
  4. Checkout the response branch.
  5. Install dependencies by running npm install
  6. Follow the directions given in lib/diagnostic.js.
  7. Check your responses by running grunt test.
  8. Before the alotted time is up, push to your fork and issue a pull request.

Your pull request description should contain a "fist to five" for comfort and clarity. Additionally, you should mention the resources you used to help you complete this diagnostic. For example:

Comfort: 3
Clarity: 3

I used Google and my class notes to help with this diagnostic.

You may wish to refer to "How do I submit diagnostics?" and other FAQs related to forking, cloning, and pull requests.

You may use any resource other than each other to complete this diagnostic. This includes referencing talk materials, appropriate documentation, and searching for help online.

You should be running grunt nag before diagnosing any bugs, since it finds some of the most common sources of errors. After grunt nag passes, you should run grunt test to run the included tests. Tests will tell you whether of not your responses are correct.

js-objects-diagnostic's Issues

Q1 throwing people off

They're only submitting one abstraction, not 3. That question may need to be re-worded.

Clarify Question 5

Question 5 says, "Attach a vocalize method to the Pet's prototype." but it doesn't describe what the method should do.

Update Tests to Be More Specific

Update tests to reflect the contents of the diagnostic and output messages specific to the questions rather than generalized messages . e.g., owner is not undefined instead of answerTwo is not undefined.

Response patterns show confusion with object literals

From @srhoulam via Slack:

i have noticed a lot of syntactic confusion
parens preceding curly braces in object literals, nestings of curly braces inside others, etc
the ones i saw who successfully assigned a function to an object attribute were very few
i'm wondering if this confusion would be remedied by teaching objects without literal notation intially
using the Object constructor and assigning properties using dot and bracket notation
also demystifying object methods by first creating a function and assigning it to a variable, then using the variable as the value for the object property to store the method
e.g.,

var f = function f() {};
var obj = new Object();
obj.method = f;
