I can't figure out how to reproduce it. Do I understand correctly that all you do is replace image src? It works fine for me. Can you clone it anew, do npm install and try again?

what a heisenbug 👻 ... after a fresh clone + npm i I reproduced it again, but I can't anymore. Not even in my older clone

Maybe some incompatible version of some package was in NPM cache?
I'm not sure which could be causing problems though. Could it be that jsx-loader (and its inner react) and top react versions were different? I don't know NPM very well yet so I can't figure out if that could have been an issue.
