What the fuck is CLEAN code?

A recent video I watched from DHH was that he likens clean code to how a short story captivates. It's not that any one line of code is a transgressor that cause the whole to become dirty, but "bad" code lacks something more subjective, a type of aesthetic, a sense of style.

I would love to see examples of code that has the same functionality but written : elegantly (most optimal), clever (concise at the expense of readability), and dumpster fire (you can see yourself out the door) with commentary on why you feel this is better than that.

As a mere fledging, I do not possess the mental representations that allow more sage developers to "see the woods from the trees". While I have seen many books that purport to help with this issue, it would be nice to have an additional reference, specifically for JS / React.
