Thanks for the interest/question. You're right in being confused regarding the term, as no such real thing exists. What I'm referring to is the most often used thick border with binary pattern contained inside, somewhat ala a QR code, except with unambiguous binary patterns being used as opposed to the three identifying corners.

Your advice in the headline is duly noted. The project would ideally have both a 'getting started' and an example. As you can tell by the commit frequency, the project is on a current hiatus, but I do plan on getting back and at least completing it in a base-form.
