Riaan,
The contrast stretcher is pretty basic. It can't stretch one image
based upon another. Basically, it can only stretch an image so that the
colors have a given range (based upon standard deviation or
percentile). Also it will convert 16-bit or floating point to 8-bit.
Some usage information is printed when you run gdal_contrast_stretch
with no arguments. A simple example is available on the wiki page:
