After this, I do Pkg.add("Compose"). This install Gadfly and using Gadfly works fine now.

Oh, that's strange.
From your output, it looks like it tried but failed to install Cairo, which is a dependency. It looks like you're building on linux, so it might be related to this issue: JuliaGraphics/Cairo.jl#9.

Yes, the problem looks to be when Pkg.add() try to install Cairo.
I'm working on Ubuntu 12.10.
P.S.: Like a ggplot2 fan, I like a lot what I see of Gadfly. Why this name?

There's a novel by Ethel Lilian Voynich of the same name, which happened to be on my desk when I was trying to think of a name. I never finished reading it though. :)
I'm going to close this, since it seems to be a cairo installation issue. Feel free to reopen if that's not the case.
