android-project's Issues

Dimmer disables on rotation.

OS: Android 11
Cyanogen/Lineage based: no
Custom Rom: no
Device: ASUS ROG phone 3
Issue: Dimmer disables itself on device rotation..

dim on screen buttons

On screen buttons (back, home, running programs) are normal brightness but should be dimmed.

Dim parts of UI

Some apps are too bright for amoled screen because their devs dont care about it and because "material design" is meant to be screen burningly bright. Some of that apps have fixed ui elements positions. So, can it be possible to
1 make screenshot
2 replace colors of needed piece, unneeded pieces redraw in transparent color.
3 draw it over screen when activity is active.

Dimmer while bright could help with dyslexia.

I am trying to work out a solution to a problem that dyslexic kids are having with reading on tablets. When the screen has a transparent hue overlay, they can better understand the text on the screen. Dimmer is the only FOSS app I can seem to find which lets you put a transparent overlay with your choice of color over the screen. However, when dimmer reaches a brightness value of above 50, it automatically disables itself. Could someone please add a toggle which allows dimmer to reach as high as full brightness while preserving the transparent hue over the screen?

Phone looses adaptive brightness setting after a few cycles of dimming

I'm running into a problem that after Dimmer has kicked in a few times I loose the adaptive brightness setting for normal daylight viewing. I understand why this should be disabled when dimming is in effect but it should be restored to it's previous setting for normal viewing.

Work with invert color scheme

Since Android 5 there is an accessibility setting to invert the colors on the screen. This can be useful for apps without different themes. However, Dimmer doesn't work as expected in this case, tending to make the screen brighter instead.

Black pixel/checkerboard grid and/or scanlines?

On high resolution amoled displays a better way to dim the screen than a dark grey overlay is to have a checkerboard grid alternating between opaque black pixels & fully transparent pixels and/or scanlines with the same properties (i.e. one fully opaque line of black pixels, one line of fully transparent pixels, and so on), of configurable density (to trade off between resolution loss/screen occlusion & decreased brightness.). This also avoids the problem of a dark grey overlay inadvertently increasing the brightness of pixels that are already set to #000000. Unfortunately the only app I've ever found for doing this is closed source and also eventually the dev sold out and infected it with horrible malware. :( I know this project hasn't had any real update in over half a decade, but… Any chance? :( also thank you for making this app, it's very useful on non-rooted devices!

Add in-app controls (not just via notification)

'Recent' Android versions block overlays from applying to the notification drawer — and in lieu of root and in view of the widespread existence of devices that, while having a 'dark' theme, still have all the notifications bright white, it'd be useful to have some actually app screen so one doesn't have to open the way way way too bright notification drawer when one wants to change the dimming level.

unable to install or update an app

While the dimmer is in action I cannot update or install any application using builtin installer program, for example when using fdroid or a direct apk file.
The "cancel" or "install" buttons are not reachable/touchable. If I momemtarly disable the dimmer it's ok.
I'm running Android 4.1.1

Screen seems to un-dim itself when the OS is low on RAM

When I have multiple Google Chrome tabs open and then I load a certain long and complex Web page, the screen un-dims itself and Dimmer's notification disappears from the list of notifications. Is it possible that the OS is terminating Dimmer due to lack of RAM? And, if so, is it possible you could please make Dimmer prevent the OS from doing so?

I'm running Dimmer 3.3.0 on a Samsung Galaxy S Relay running Android 4.1.2.

P.S. Thank you very much for writing Dimmer and for releasing it as FOSS.

Dimmer crashes on alternative icon sets in Cyanogenmod

I designed dimmer an icon for Twelf and Onze CM themes. But after setting the theme, Dimmer crashes on start. There was no problem with Dimmer in the previous versions on themes that haven’t include the Dimmer icon.
