Not sure I like what you are trying to do, but then I don't appreciate the greater context of what you are trying to achieve. :-)
Anyway, try something like the following. Note that I can't see that you need the inner _execute() function.
@wrapt.decorator
def inplace(wrapped, instance, args, kwargs):
inplace = kwargs.pop('inplace', False)
if inplace:
# just call the method (which is always written to modify self)
wrapped(*args, **kwargs)
return None # prevent accidental chaining when inplace
else:
new_instance = instance.copy() # assume we know instance has .copy()
# call the self-modifying method on a new self
# to do this we need to extract the original method from the bound method
# we then rebind that to the new instance.
func = wrapped.__func__
bound_func = func.__get__(new_instance, type(new_instance))
bound_func(*args, **kwargs)
return new_instance # instance left unmodified
This will only work if applied to a normal method of a class. It likely cannot be used on a method which has another decorator applied to it which doesn't preserve object binding behaviour.
You may therefore want to have sanity checks to detect incorrect usage. So something to the effect of:
assert instance is not None and not isinstance(type)
from wrapt.
Thanks for this @GrahamDumpleton. I agree that this usage is a little hairy and we haven't taken it any further at this point, I'll let you know how we get on if we do try it down the line.

I will close this issue at this point then, but if got further questions or doesn't work as want, let me know.
