earfuck's Introduction

earfuck

A brainfuck interpreter that outputs sound.

Requirements

Usage

Using the interpreter is easy. Just build the application with your favorite C++ compiler that fits the above criteria.

$ c++ --std=c++14 -Wall -Wextra -Werror core.cpp memory.cpp program.cpp -o bfinterpreter

Then simply run the application like so:

$ ./bfinterpreter [options] instructions [stdin]

Note that you should be wrapping the instructions and stdin with quotation marks to avoid accidentally entering a pipe.

instructions is a required argument. Leave stdin empty if you have no stdin for the brainfuck program.

The currently viable options are:

  • -i or --instruction-file — tells the program that instructions is a path leading to the file containing the brainfuck instructions.
  • -s or --stdin-file — tells the program that stdin is a path leading to the file containing the brainfuck instructions.

Options can be added in any order, but the order of instructions and stdin is constant.

TODO:

  1. ...get the base interpreter working ✓
  2. Add support for reading programs from files ✓
  3. Adjust base interpreter to output to POSIX/WINAPI-compliant beep() function ✓
  4. Utilize MIDI library or other sound engine to output sounds (perhaps even different timbres?)

earfuck's Issues

Option detection leads to misinterpretation

If you try passing instructions or filenames that start with hyphens, the program misinterprets them as option flags.

λ ~/Documents/Code/earfuck/build/ master* ./a.out "-------------------------------------------------------------------->+++++++++++++++.>++++++++++++++++>+++++++."
./a.out: unrecognized option '-------------------------------------------------------------------->+++++++++++++++.>++++++++++++++++>+++++++.'
Exception caught: Usage: ./earfuck [options] instructions [stdin]

Windows command line option support

Current implementation of GNU getopt for parsing command line options means windows users are left out unless the getopt code is explicitly included in the repository.

Possible solutions:

  1. Include GNU getopt code in the repository (check licensing!)
  2. Rewrite option parsing from scratch (will help solve #2)

Rest Support

Need to add support for rests (silence) — what I'm currently thinking of is using the frequency value -128 to denote a rest, which provides equal intervals (-127 to 127) above and below A4 (with a default value of 0).
