iqaasl-end-0f-sampling-2021's Introduction

Identification, quantification and analysis of observable anthropogenic debris along swiss river and lakes (IQAASL)

DOI

IQAASL was a project sponsored by the Swiss Federal Office for the Environment to quantify shoreline trash along swiss lakes and rivers. Multiple small scale litter surveys are completed at different locations within a designated survey area. For the year 2020/2021 the survey areas were defined by the municipalities that border the Aare, Rhône, Ticino and Linth/Limmat rivers and any lakes or rivers that are within the catchment area.

The following components (currently being refactored), were developed specifically to manage the data collected:

Develpment of these two tools stopped for two years while we were out in the field collecting samples. The new version of the API and frontend will incorporate language support and additional functionality in the survey form.

hammerdirt staff maintain the repo for the report, the API and the front end.

Contributing

This report was the inspiration for three manuscripts in devlopment and could serve as an initiation to data science and computing. Specifically for those interested in discrete, random observations or count data methods this repo may provide you with a new challenge.

The REST API for the new application is in development here IQALS

Currently there is a team working on the application of a simple machine learning model that describes the probability of finding an object given the data. Development has also begun on a more complex model that predicts the range of probable values that a person may encounter.

The methods and formatting used in this report are being refactored for use in the litter surveyor as the evolution of that application continues.

There are ample oportunities to learn, teach and contribute.

German grammar error in Lakes and rivers chapter and Alpes and jura chapter

Lakes and rivers:

Alpes and Jura

Correct translation and syntax in more and less trash

Section 21.3.4. Landnutzungsprofil
Change Spearman”s ρ orSpearmans to: Spearmans ρ oder Spearmans....
Remove English phrase: An association suggests that survey totals for that object will change in relation to the amount of space attributed to that feature, or in the case of roads or river intersections, the quantity. The magnitude of the relationship is not defined and any association is not linear.

Stakeholder review (SR) 1

The german translations for the survey area template need to be updated according to the SR comments. A sample of the current status can be found in the templates folder.

Markdown syntax errors

The python script that produces the markdown does not need formatting syntax around the variables.

Survey area template translations

The following translations have been updated:

intersects: Flussmündung
Rose: Rosa
Strandabfälle:Strand-Abfallobjeket

This was in a general method:
Right: Rechts

Rapport Cantonal

Il y a une demande pour développer un rapport au niveau cantonal.

Les détails n'ont pas été précisés

German grammar error in lake chapters

Chapter Bielersee - Text below 7.1 "Erhebungsorte"

Die Ergebnisse des Bielersee umfassen 10 Orte, 8 Gemeinden und eine Gesamtbevölkerung von etwa 70 810 Einwohnenden.
Please add a "s" to "Bielersee". It should be "Bielersees". #23

German grammar error in survey area chapters

Chapter Aare - Text below 3.1 "Erhebungsorte und Landnutzungsprofile"
Die Ergebnisse des Erhebungsgebiet Aare umfassen 51 Orte, 35 Gemeinden und eine Gesamtbevölkerung von etwa 493 799 Einwohnenden.
Please add a "s" to "Erhebungsgebiet". It should be "Erhebungsgebiets"

Change name chapter 21

Changing the name of chapter 21 needs to be discussed. The translation is not the same. In English we are saying there was more and less when both sampling periods are considered, depending on which object you are talking about.

The following changes were made:

remove stray english phrase
add missing translation
rose:rosa
Interpretation Sie Spearmans: Interpretation von Spearmans
correct inverted phrase

New map on title page

The request is to replace the map on the title page with map markers that are scaled to the median survey result from the survey location.

  1. There is work in progress that can increase the amount of information at the national and regional scale that would better serve the graphic.
  2. The techniques used in the land-use chapter are used as the basis for creating a gradient that describes the probability of depassing a certain limit for a given group of data.
  3. The limit we are testing is the median value of the all the survey results from the project

It may be worth letting that map feature evolve over the next two weeks before making anychanges.

Organizational info in reports

In Annex sections of report in english & duetsch remove organization section # and replace with: Survey locations and inventory
De: Die Erhebungsorte und das Inventar der Objekte

Number of survey locations used in chapter 20

I have some questions on chapter 20.3 "The data" (applies to English and German version):
Why does the caption of the map of survey locations indicate that you did 300 surveys at 84 different locations? According to the Executive Summary you did 386 surveys at 143 different locations. Why are those not the same numbers?

Please also check the enumartion in the German chapter, since 20.3 "The data" ist chapter 20.2 in the German chapter.

English version

Now that the German version is the new basis I can't find the access to English version. I think it is important that the study is still available in English (and we do communicate this on the BAFU-Webpage!).

Code review

A review of methods used at each aggregation level needs to be completed:

  1. Lake or water body
  2. Survey areas
  3. Survey totals national

Devise the structure to better implement the common aggregation methods and reduce the code base.

Change of translation

Survey results and land use column headers: change % zu Gebäude to % zu Gebäuden. Change kreuzt to Intersekte
