Emoji Buckts

Emoji Buckets is a shell extension for the GNOME desktop.

About

This is a GNOME shell extension that provides buckets of emojis. Simply click on the emoji of your choice and it will be placed into your clipboard.

Installation

Install using the GNOME Shell Extensions website

Visit the Emoji Buckets page using Firefox. Click the button to turn the extension on and agree to the installation.

Install manually

First, make sure you have a font that supports emoji. This uses EmojiOne with Noto Emoji and Symbola as fallback so be sure to install at least one of these fonts.

You can install this extension by downloading a released version and extracting the files into the following directory.

~/.local/share/gnome-shell/extensions/emoji_buckets@harlemsquirrel

Log out or restart the GNOME shell to make it available in GNOME Tweak. Note that on Wayland restarting the GNOME shell is not working as of 3.22.2.

Troubleshooting

One of the best ways to troubleshott is to watch the logs with journalctl and restart the extension. You can reload this extension with the handy Gnome Shell Extension Reloader extension.

journalctl --since="`date '+%Y-%m-%d %H:%M'`" -f | grep emoji_buckets

gnome-emoji-buckets's Issues

Add a tooltip to every emoji showing its CLDR short name

Since the emoji shown in the extension is B&W emoji (which is without color and have completely different look compared to the colored ones in web browsers), some users may find it difficult recognizing them at the first time.

Therefore, showing a tooltip that displays the CLDR short name may help a lot. A complete list of the emoji names can be found here.

It appears to me that a CLDR short name is the standard name of an emoji, although it might not be true. I think there's a standard way to get the their official names.

Add a scroll bar to the over-long sections

For the "flags" and "symbols" section it is sometimes to long to ft inside the screen. It would be nice if a scroll bar is added. Thus, scaling the emoji size to 3 still makes the extension usable.

Provide an option to type an emoji right after I clicked on It

If possible, please provide an option in the settings dialog that switches between "copy to clipboard" and "type it directly". For emoji heavy users like me the click-and-paste procedure is sometimes cumbersome compared to the keyboard on mobile phones.

But if GNOME Shell framework does not allow this behavior, what a pity...
