django-slimmer's Introduction

django-slimmer

This module is a django conversion of CheckoutableTemplates Zope package: http://zope.org/Members/peterbe/CheckoutableTemplates

The slimmer is taken directly from the Zope package, with django middleware and a view decorator added.

The slimming process takes html and removes whitespace, optimizes inline css, removes oneline comments. The end result can be a significant file size reduction even after the page is served with gzip compression.

Installation

sudo easy_install django-slimmer

Install middleware

'slimmer.middleware.CompressHtmlMiddleware',

Or you can use a view decorator to compress specific views

from slimmer.decorator import compress_html

@compress_html
def browse(request):
    context = RequestContext(request,{})
    return render_to_response('browse.html',context)

Using the slimmer directly

from slimmer import slimmer
compressed = slimmer.xhtml_slimmer(html)

django-slimmer's Issues

Inadvertent comment stripping

The current regexp used to strip one-line HTML comments has two bugs:

  1. It's called after the whitespace stripping regexp, which means that every comment is considered to be one line and is therefore stripped. This is confusing if you've ready the source and expect multiline comments to stay intact.
  2. Due to the above all Internet Explorer conditional comments will be stripped, which are often used for things like compatibility stylesheets. I chose to fix this by changing the regexp to not match '<!--[', which is the conditional comment start, but fixing both problems by swapping steps 3 (one-line comment strip) and step 2 (stripping whitespace between tags) will leave multi-line conditional comments (which most tend to be) intact. Arguably both would be a good idea.
