heroku-buildpack-inline's Introduction

Heroku Buildpack: Inline

This is a Heroku buildpack for Heroku apps that wish to build themselves.

It expects the app to provide the usual buildpack executables in its source tree, in a directory named "bin" in the top of the git repo; this is the same interface all other buildpacks provide. See the buildpack documentation for more details about this interface.

Thus, an app serves as its own buildpack.

Phil Hagelberg originated this lovely idea.

Usage

$ find . -type f -print
./bin/compile
./bin/detect
./bin/release
./bin/run
./Procfile

$ cat Procfile
work: bin/run

$ heroku create
...

$ heroku buildpacks:add -i 1 heroku-community/inline
...

$ git push heroku master
...

heroku-buildpack-inline's Issues

Breaks top level python imports

I'm not sure if there's a way around this, or how difficult it would be to change, but using this buildpack will break any .py files that use an import path that includes the top level directory (which gets deleted)

Example:
Given the following (and assuming you're running out of root):

root/
-->program/
-->-->main.py
-->-->submodules/
-->-->-->sub.py

Any code in sub.py that wishes to reference objects defined in main.py will have to use the import path from root.program.main..., but when deployed on heroku, the root directory is destroyed which breaks those imports.
